BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN POP AND ROCK!

April 2004

Ira Losco – Someone Else

She’s been an indie chick, she’s been a Eurovision diva and now Ira Losco has set her sights on the pop world. Packing subtle elements carried forward from her previous musical forays, namely the less commercial lean of Tiara and the pop glean of her Seventh Wonder days, Ira’s latest is actually much more than the sum of just these two parts. She has clearly been hard at work, co-writing most of the 12 tracks on offer here, including some of the album’s more outstanding tracks. This probably explains the cohesive trait running throughout the album, deeply entrenched inside pop-rock territory except for the title track and a couple of other instances.

Ira sounds at her best – and most comfortable – on those songs bearing a rockier edge. Tracks like Love Me Or Hate Me, Not About You and the flowing Say Hey, penned by Ray of Characters fame, are good examples of this. On tracks like Must’ve Been Good and She, brazenly reflecting borrowed influences, the potential of ‘chartdom’ shines brighter. The downside to having so many strong tunes is perhaps that some tracks may pale in comparison, as is the case with Rocket To Venus and the closer, So Alive. Nevertheless, this does not hinder Someone Else from being a lush collection of promising pop songs!
