BLURRED ROCK FROM THE SUN!

September 2004

HIDDENSUN - INSIDE

It has taken a while – it’s even involved a decisive name change and an even more crucial change in direction, but Hiddensun’s debut album is here! Leaving behind – way behind! - any trace of the band’s early days, the rock on Inside is largely informed by an American tilt, particularly the lingering influence of the Seattle sound, although there are moments when elements of other rock-based genres also come to light.

The most prominent of these is the opening track, Whats Yours?. Its patent nu-metal attitude may mistakenly suggest that Inside is going to be a heavy album. In truth, the music on offer is more of a measured balance of driving rock, subtle melodies and an overall contemporary edge, emphasised by the cosmetic yet essential sampling and turntablism that has become an integral part of Hiddensun’s sound. Led by Peter’s strong vocals, Hiddensun’s songs don’t quite belong exclusively to either a niche audience or the mainstream market. Instead, they blur the dividing line, swaying from one side to the other with each of the 11 songs featured here.

Of particular note are the previously released (and immediately familiar) songs, namely Ticked Off, Bitch and the brilliant Misunderstood. Like the new single Streets, these songs are seeped in the US rock sound that is so obviously a huge influence on the band. They aren’t hiding it of course - on the contrary, they employ their influences and match them to their own inspirations, an approach that works a treat, as songs like On My Own, Inside and Gimme A Break prove only too well. Closing track Lately on the other hand, offers a rare insight into Hiddensun’s quieter side.
