PROGRESSIVE DIVERSITY
June 2002
COLOURBLIND - FOREVER LOST
Three years and countless live concerts since its
inception, Maltese rock band Colourblind has released its debut CD.
Titled Forever Lost, the CD only features four songs, but the total
playing time clocks in at over half an hour of firm, focused old school
prog-rock!
Recorded at Farmhouse Studios, Forever Lost represents Colourblind
wholesomely – reflecting the several, diverse influences – namely Jethro
Tull, Rush, and Queen - yet also allowing the band’s own style to seep
through. The opening track, Colourblind, is an anthem in itself, forging
ahead on the strength of the band’s progressive rock traits, and
embellished with delicate string interjections that have made it a
definite live favourite. The title track, echoing the eclectic structure
of Bohemian Rhapsody, is quieter by comparison but builds up to stabbing
choruses that tend to put Paul’s vocal range to a tough test. The ballad
Time (To Change) may come across as predictable in rock terms, but the
no-frills guitarwork is enough to give an added melodic edge, further
carried along by warm, pleasant vocal harmonies. Were it not over 6
minutes, this song would probably enjoy a healthy residency on local
radio playlists. The last track, Devil Dance, is another live favourite.
This 10-minute opus reveals obvious Dream Theater inspiration, but the
sweeping keyboard backdrop gives it a stamp of Colourblind’s homegrown
authenticity. Like Forever Lost, Devil Dance is eclectic to say the
least, with its diversity oozing hints of several prog icons all at
once.
These four tracks offer a brief but lucid portrait of Colourblind’s
obvious potential. It is no surprise that the band’s blend of melodic,
enticing music, further complemented by inspired lyrics and intricate
arrangements, has earned them a sizeable local following. Expect to hear
more from this band!
Colourblind is Paul (vocals); Alistair(guitars); Shaun (drums), Etienne
(keyboards) and Adriano(bass).
