The Use of Riddems
So you've been listening to Chris Goldfinger on Radio One, or any of the other latest ragga sets? You may of come across the Back Yard riddem. Yep, the riddem for '99. It was made by some Jamaican geezer. Let me get to the point, this is no Slave, no Nightrider riddem. This is the steppy beat, cut up, processed and reprogrammed, runnin' at a steady 168bpm. It's got a hip-hop sample "back yard bbbback yard" every 4 bars, and also a bounty sample "ppl die". First time I heard it was when DJ Village dropped it in the last week of 98 "now massive this maybe something different, but trust me, massive this one a gwan mash up 99 seen, listen now." A I n I remember getting really excited @1 in the morning and I was going what the f*ck, this is jungle, I was really tempted to crank the radio right up, but I was afraid to wake up the house. for those that don't know what selectas do with riddems in England. They usually mix them in with the acapella on the flip of the ragga tune. This has been done with so many riddems, I can't name many, but the most famous is the Nightrider riddem, that came about after Busta Rhymes made that tune, what was it called?... I can't remember... *thinks hard* oh, yeah fire it up. Theres another riddem Im familiar with it goes "hey, hey". Can't remember the name though. However unlike the Batty, Slave riddem, etc this Back Yard riddem has not been sampled yet, so only the DJs play "jungle mixes" or ragga tunes. But seeing that most ragga tunes come with an acapella on the flip, you might as well just mix it live. Now which ragga tune would go well with Roni's mix of Bamaataa, or even Jack the Ripper, or some Ed Rush tracks?.
BTW for the overseas massive you can hear the back yard riddem on
interface pirate radio at: Interface
On Saturday 1:30 am GMT. That's right after the Flame kru's set. The DJ
is MKII.
I haven't really heard any new reggae sets in the last month, so
Im not sure if this riddem is still runnin'. But, if you go in a bit early, he is in the
chat room, just request it and it's certain he will play it.
