Toy Soldiers

Like Toy Soldiers

The group sat quietly in the hotel room Chris and JC shared, trying to relax for the first time in nearly eighteen hours. Their day had started out with an interview with five different teen magazines. After that they had gone to a popular radio station to give away tickets to their concert, then a television interview, a photo shoot for another magazine with an interview, sound check, a meet and greet with their fans and contest winners, then finally the concert which lasted two and a half hours.

Chris sighed as he channel surfed with the remote control in one hand and a can of soda in the other. Justin talked softly on his cellular phone to his younger brother, who had been waiting for his phone call. Lance sat in a corner talking to his mother on his own cell phone, whom was filling him in on the happenings of the country singers he was producing. Joe idly flipped through a news paper, reading the articles that caught his eye. JC sat on one of the two beds, trying to focus his eyes on the television screen.

"Fifty-five channels to chose from and there's nothing worthwhile on." Chris mumbled with a shake of his head.

"Just pick something. You're driving my eyes crazy." JC groaned, rubbing his burning eyes. A knock sounded at the door, causing Chris to sigh. He had wanted to get some serious down time with his best friends. JC reluctantly climbed to his feet and pulled the door open.

"Hi JC." Katie smiled up at him.

"Hey there. Come on in." he returned the smile, holding the door open for her. Katie stepped inside, JC closing the door behind her.

"Hey you." Justin smiled at her as he slipped his cellular phone back into his jacket pocket.

"You look like death warmed over." she commented as she walked over to him.

"I always did love the way you sweet talk me." Justin countered drily, shaking his head in amusement.

"Its all a part of my master plan." Katie shot back treasingly.

"Oh yeah? What's your master plan?" JC inquired, raising an eyebrow at her.

"To charm him into submission so I can take over the boy band industry, of course." Katie laughed, wagging a finger at JC.

"Oh, right." JC nodded sensibly as he flopped back down on the bed he had claimed as his own. Justin sat up, slipping his arms around her waist.

"Where's Billie and Allison?" Lance inquired, climbing to his feet.

"Calling home at the moment." Katie sighed the answer.

"That's right. I almost forgot." Lance shook his head regretfully.

"Yeah. We all go home in three days." Katie mumbled glancing down at Justin, her eyes filled with apprehension. He reached up and gently caressed her cheek with his knuckles.

"Well I, for one, am going to miss you ladies." Chris smiled at Katie as another knock sounded at the door. Chris climbed to his feet and opened the door. Billie and Allison smiled at the older man.

"Hey." Chris returned the smile as the two women walked inside. Billie glanced around the room, an amused smile on her face.

"Looks like the county morgue in here." Billie commented as she flopped down on the bed next to JC.

"Its been a long day." JC replied and covered a yawn with his hand, as he walked to the bathroom to take a quick shower. The hotel phone rang, causing everyone to groan. Joe, who was closest to the phone, reached for it.

"Hello?"

"Hi Joe, its Mike."

"Hey, what's up?"

"Um... I'm about to fall apart. Is JC still up?"

"He's in the bathroom at the moment. You want to tell me what's going on?"

"My..uh.. my brother.. he d... he died a few minutes ago."

"Oh, man. How are you holding up?" Joe inquired then covered the mouth piece with his hand, turning to Justin. "J, call the airline and book JC on the next flight to Boston."

"I'm not doing so well, but I have to remain strong for my family. The funeral is the day after tomorrow and the memorial a week after that."

"Do you want the rest of us to be there?"

"Yeah. I'd appreciate that."

"Alright, here's JC." Joe told her softly. He waited a moment, causing JC to raise an eyebrow at him.

"Sage died." Joe informed him in a whisper, handing the phone to him. JC sighed, eyes closed as he held the phone to his ear.

"Hey baby, how are you holding?"

"Not very well, Josh. Sage died earlier."

"I know, Joe just told me. What can I do?"

"There's nothing anyone can do at this point. Mom and dad lost it, like they thought he'd never die. So I'm the only person left to arrange everything and go through his room."

"I wish I were there to help you."

"No, you have to stay there and finish out the tour."

"Our last concert was tonight. So all we have to do is a couple of interviews that can be rescheduled."

"Josh, stay there. You can't cancel on them at the last minute. It would give you guys a bad name. It will tamper with your untarnished image."

"Screw my image. That's not important to me. You are."

"You don't have to come here."

"Mike, sweetheart, listen to me. I love you and through all your stubborness, I know you want me there."

"Okay, so I do. I also know that I can't have everything I want."

"Stop trying to talk me out of this, little one. Its not going to work."

"Why do you always argue with me?"

"Because if I didn't, you would think I was an insipid Orlando snob"

"Using twenty dollar words again."

"I'm gonna go call the airlines. I'll be there as soon as I can."

"Josh, you have to stay there."

"I'm not staying here. I'm going to be on the next flight to Boston, with or without your approval."

"You are so infuriating, but I love you."

"I love you, too. See you soon." JC smiled sadly as he hung up the phone. Chris walked over to him, holding a duffle bag.

"Your flight leaves in an hour and a half. You better get a move on." Chris told him, reliquishing his hold on the bag.

"The limo's downstairs waiting for you." Justin opened the door for him.

"By the time you get there, a rental car will be waiting for you." Lance sighed tiredly.

"Thanks guys." JC gave them a grateful smile before he disappeared out into the hallway. Jusitn closed the door behind JC with a sigh. He walked over to an empty chair and sat down. He walked over to an empty chair and sat down. Everyone remained silent, not knowing what to say in the wake of this bad news. Katie walked over to Justin and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him into a hug. Justin rested his cheek on her stomach as his arms came about her waist, hugging her back. Joe sighed, rubbing his face tiredly.

"We should all try to get some sleep." Chris commented, covering a yawn with the back of his hand.

"Chris is right. You guys have had a long day. Sleep is in order." Katie agreed with a nod as she pulled away from Justin, who gazed up at her with an eyebrow raised in curiosity.

"Hear, hear." Joe mumbled as he climbed to his feet. "Come on pretty boy."

Billie, Allison and Joe all walked tiredly to the door, Katie following them with a sigh. Justin quickly stood up and walked out into the hallway, shutting the door behind him. Billie, Allison and Joe were already half way down the hallway when Justin caught up with Katie and grabbed her hand, pulling her up short. She gazed down at the carpet, not daring to meet his luminous blue eyes.

"What's on your mind?" he inquired softly, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"Nothing but a nice warm, comfortable bed." she shrugged with a sigh, still not daring to meet his eyes.

"Then why is your brow furrowed like that?" Justin pressed on, lightly tracing his fingertips long her forehead.

"Laugh lines?" Katie answered hopefully, waving a hand in the air. Justin shook his head silently as he leaned back against the wall, waiting patiently for her to give a real answer.

"Alright, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop." Katie sighed with resignation.

"With?" Justin prompted softly.

"You and me." she finally gazed up at him.

"Oh, you mean us." he smiled knowingly. Katie flushed, turning her back on him. He snaked his arms around her waist, bringing her back against him.

"Is there an us?" she inquired in a whisper.

"I was hoping there was." Justin admitted honestly.

"These past few months have been like a fairy tale, and long distance relationship rarely work out." Katie reminded softly with a shake of her head.

"Maybe, but its worth a try, isn't it?" he inquired, his lips brushing lightly against her ear.

"I honestly don't know." she answered, closing her eyes breifly against the sudden onslaught on tears she felt pricking her eyes.

"Tell you what. I'll call you every chance I get, write to you once a week. I'll even learn how to do the e-mail thing. I'm willing to do just about anything to make this work. That is, if you're willing to do the same." Justin stated, turning her to face him.

"Okay." Katie nodded with a soft laugh.

"Now, that's better." he smiled, pressing his lips against her forehead. Her eyes fluttered shut as she leaned into him, resting her head on his chest. He hugged her tightly to him, his own eyes closing for a moment. Justin's heart thudded painfully in his chest when he thought about her leaving to go back home. He couldn't let her go. The realization rocked him to the core, creating new confusion and termoil. The last thing in the world he wanted to do was hurt Katie and he knew he was being selfish for not letting her go, but he couldn't help it. He didn't have the heart, courage or will power to walk out of her life as if she hadn't affected him, touched his heart.

I think I've fallen in love with you. The words were on the tip of his tongue, tasting bittersweet. He opened his mouth to let the words spill out, but thought better of it and stopped himself short. He didn't want to scare her or himself. A certain ammount of commitment and promises come with an admission like that and he just didn't want to break either of their hearts if this didn't work out the way they hoped it would.

"You should go to bed. You need sleep." Katie suggested, breaking into his thoughts as she pulled away from him.

" I know." Justin nodded, pushing himself away from the wall.

" Good night, Justin." she smiled up at him as he took her hand in his.

"'Night, Princess." he smiled deilishly, reminding her of the nickname she had hated only weeks before and now loved, before pressing a kiss to her knuckles. He leaned back against the door to his room, arms folded across his chest as he watched Katie walk to her room, making sure she made it safely.

Mike wandered around her parents' house, which was deathly silent because everyone had finally gone to their rooms to sleep. Sleep was the last thing on her mind, something that was unthinkable at that moment in time. Sage's two year old son, Tristan, had fallen asleep in her old room, surrounded with the stuffed animals she had kept from her childhood. Mike wore her usual night clothes, a pair of boxer shorts and an old football jersey. She gazed at herself in the hallway mirror and sighed. In short, she looked dreadfull. Her face was drawn and pale, dark circles bagged under her eyes. She shook her head in disgust as she quietly padded up the stairs to Sage's bedroom. She silently closed the door behind her and took a look around. Posters of Metallica and various other heavy metal bands dotted three of the walls. The fourth wall, from floor to ceiling, was covered with pictures of friends and family. Sage had jokingly called it his wall of shame. She walked over to the closet and pulled the door open. It was packed with clothes, games and shoeboxes full of pictures and information about AIDS. She sighed as she grabbed an armful of clothing and dropped it onto the bed, continuing to do so until the closet was void of all of Sage's clothes. When she finished with that, she made up a couple of boxes. One was designated for the Salvation Army and the other was designated for her to take to Orlando with her. The door opened just as she started folding the clothes to deposit them into their respective boxes.

"Baby girl, are you okay?" her father inquired, stepping into the room.

"Yeah daddy, I'm fine." she gave him a forced smile as she continued sorting through the clothes.

"Then whya re you up at four-thirty in the morning?" he pressed softly.

"I don't know." Mike shrugged with a sigh. "I just couldn't sleep so I thought I'd do something productive."

"You know this can wait awhile." he reminded her.

"I know."

"All right, but please try and get some sleep." he pleaded, tugging his robe tighter around him.

"I will daddy." she promised as he walked from the room.

JC walked to the front door of the Costeo house feeling like he had been run over by a bus. He was exhausted and he was in sore need of a shower and shave. He knocked on the door and sighed, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. After a few moments, the door slowly opened, showing an intimidating older man.

"Mr. Costeo?" JC inquired nervously.

"Yeah." the older man nodded.

"Hi, I'm Joshua Chasez." JC stated, holding out his hand.

"Oh right." Mr. Costeo shook the younger man's hand. "My little girl's boyfriend. Come on in."

"I'm sorry we couldn't meet under better circumstances." JC sighed as he stepped inside.

"Yeah, me too." Mr. Costeo agreed with a nod as he turned to JC. "My daughter has shut herself off completely from all emotion. She thinks we shouldn't have to deal with her mourning. She's just like that. She's always been the strongest out of my kids when it comes to emotional pain. Michaela and Sage were much like twins. I hope she'll talk to you. Show what really going on inside."

"I hope soo, too, Mr. Costeo." JC smiled sympathetically.

"She's up in Sage's room. Upstairs, fourth door on the right." Mr. Costeo nodded toward the staircase.

"Thanks." JC replied as he climbed up the stairs. He stopped in front of the door to Sage's room and sighed tiredly. He slowly, quietly opened the door and gazed into the room. He saw Mike leaning against the wall, a shirt pressed to her face, shoulders shaking with muffled sobs. He stood in the doorway for a moment, his heart aching for her, before he stepped into the room.

Katie let herself into the hotel room she shared with the other ladies and sighed, flopping down on her empty bed. Billie and Allison glanced over at her, their eyes dancing with knowing humor. Katie flung an arm across her eyes, groaning loudly. Billie closed the book she had just started reading with a loud snap and waited expectantly for Katie to say something. Allison folded her arms across her chest, leaning back against the headboard.

"Why is love too much like jumping off a cliff without a parachute?" Katie mumbled as she struggled into a sitting position.

"I have no idea. What brought this on?" Billie shook her head as she made herself comfortable.

"I'm just not looking forward to going home." Katie shrugged with a sigh.

"How come?" Allison raised an eyebrow.

"Lets just say there's not a whole lot of love in my home." Katie shook her head.

"We're listening." Billie prompted softly.

"There's this ongoing battle that a few people have to go through. Most everyone thinks that if you grow up in a wealthy family, you have everything you could possibly need or want. When it comes to material things, that's very true. I have the best of everything." Katie started, hugging a pillow in front of her like a sheild. "But when it comes to anything emotional, my life is severely lacking. I mean, the last time my parents and I were in the same house at the same time was almost a year ago. The two of them h ave been traveling abroad for the past two years. I was raised by a nanny, the cook, the house keeper and the butler. Not once has my parents ever told me that they love me. Hell, they even forgot my birthday last year because they were too busy in Africa."

"Oh man. I'm sorry." Billie climbed onto Katie's bed with her.

"Then I win this essay contest and I meet the coolest people and end up falling for one of them.Out of the blue, he starts to feel the same way about me and for once in my life, I feel like someone cares about me without having to be paid by my parents. Pretty morbid, huh?" Katie laughed tiredly, her eyes filling with tears of fustration.

"You're an only child?" Allison inquired, also climbing onto Katie's bed. Katie nodded with a sniff.

"Have you told Justin all this?" Billie handed her younger friend a Kleenex from the box on the night stand. Katie shook her head.

"Why not? I think he would understand." Billie folded her hands in her lap.

"Remember how he used to torment me because I was born wealthy? I couldn't handle it again. Besides, I don't know how he'll react." Katie shrugged, dabbing at her tear streaked cheeks.

"Don't you think you're underestimating him just a little bit?" Allison raised an eyebrow.

"That's just it. This is all new to me and I don't know how to react." Katie burried her face in her hands.

"Take everything in stride, one day at a time." Billie smooth Katie's hair from her face. "That's all anyone can do."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Hey Joe?" Justin called out softly in the darkened hotel room, burrowing under the blankets.

"Yeah?" Joe mumbled sleepily.

"What do you think of Katie?" Justin yawned then folded his arms behind his head.

"I think she's a sweet girl. Why?" Joe smiled secretively to himself.

"No reason." Justin shook his head.

"And if I believe that...." Joe laughed softly, letting his voice trail off.

"Don't believe me?" Jusitn inquired, his voice laced with humor.

"Not particularly." Joe snorted.

"Okay. So, maybe I'm falling for her." Justin mumbled.

"Maybe?" Joe countered with a laugh.

"Fine. Am." Justin practically growled.

"And the truth comes out. You think we couldn't see it happening? You two are so transparent when it comes to the other. What are you planning on doing about it?" Joe yawned, making himself comfortable.

"I have no idea." Justin laughed, pressing his face into a pillow.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

JC walked over to Mike and wrapped his arms around her. She rested her forehead against his shoulder, tears gliding silently down her cheeks. JC pressed a kiss to her temple, hoping for the right words to tell her.

"Part of me still expects him to come walking through that door and start yelling at me for going through his clothes." she whispered, her voice raw from crying, as she pulled away from him. JC remained silent, patiently waiting for her to get everything off her chest and out into the open. She picked up a shirt, folded it then stuffed it into the Salvation Army box. JC took a seat on the bed, watching Mike's stiff movements, wishing there was something he could do to help ease her pain.

"I don't think I can do this. Bury another brother. Watch my nephew slowly die of the same disease. I don't know if I can help raise a child that, in all likelyhood, will never reach the age where a good upbringing matters more than CoaCoa Puffs and Saturday morning cartoons." Mike's voice broke as she stuffed another shirt in the Salvation Army box.

"You won't have to do all that alone. You have your family, the guys, me." JC reminded her softly, helping her fold the clothes on the bed.

"I know, and that helps, but I promised Sage so many different things." she sighed before she sealed up the now full box with packing tape.

"Like what?" he inquired, glancing over at his girlfriend.

"I would be strong for Tristan and the rest of the family. I wouldn't mourn his death and instead would rejoice that he was no longer in pain. He made me promise that I would throw a party in his honor. I thought it would be easier than this because I've been preparing for this moment for years." Mike tossed a hand into the air.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Mike raced around her room, looking for something to wear for school that day. She had overslept, something she rarely did and had always hated when it happened. She pulled out a black t-shirt and a pair of faded blue jeans from the closet and tossed both onto the bed. She first pulled on the jeans then the t-shirt before she grabbed her brush to pull her hair up into a ponytail. Half way through the task, a knock sounded on her bedroom door.

"Come on in!" she yelled as she reached for her book bag on the floor to pack up her books for the day. The door opened and her younger brother, Sage, stepped inside. He closed the door behind him and turned to him, his face distant and remote.

"Hey, what's up?" Mike raised an eyebrow at him, holding a book about to be dropped into the bag.

"I need to talk to you." he told her, shoving his hands into his jeans pockets nervously.

"Okay, talk." she smiled, shoving the book into the bag. She zipped the bag up and sat down on her bed, waiting for him to speak his mind.

"Not here. Can we go to the beach?" Sage shook his head.

"You wanna ditch school? Who are you and what have you done with my real brother?" Mike demanded with a soft laugh.

"This is serious Mike." he grumbled angrily.

"Okay, grab your stuff and lets go to the beach." she smiled at him as she climbed to her feet. Minutes later they were in Mike's car, heading towards Sage's favorite beach to talk. After driving in silence for twenty minutes, they reached the sand and got out of the car.

"So, what's so important that you wanted to ditch school and come here? We haven't been here since we were kids." Mike gazed over at him as she took a seat on the cool sand, the soft wind tickling her face.

"I'm dying." Sage told her with a sigh.

"What are you talking about?" she laughed.

"You know how I've been tired a lot lately? I had a blood test done to check for different things. Doctor Ross said it might be a good idea. He called me back a couple of weeks ago with the test results. Mike, I'm HIV positive." Sage sighed, taking a handful of sand and sifting it through his finers.

"What?" she whispered, her heart dropping into her stomach.

"You heard me, Sassy." he mumbled, shaking his head. A strange numbness settled over Mike, an a feeling of unreality, almost as if this were a bad episode of a soap opera. She stook her head, mumbling an incoherant sentence. Sage leaned over and wrapped his arms around her.

"I'm going to die, Mike." he whispered to her.

"No! There's new technology every day. Someone will find a cure." Mike denied his admission swiftly, jumping to her feet.

"You know as well as I do that there'll be no cure." Sage shook his head, almost ruefully at her anger.

"You don't know that." she practically shouted. "If you think that I'm going to stand idly by and watch you wither away into nothing, you're sorely mistaken Sage Costeo. You're my brother and I'll fight to the death for you. If that's pressuring people to find a cure, then so be it. I'm not afraid to take these people on."

"I know. That's why you're the only person who knows right now. I needed some of your strength to keep going." he nodded with a smile, climbing to his feet. "I had to tell the school nurse in case anything happened, and now they want to kick me out because I'm positive."

Mike raised an eyebrow, utter fury taking over her features, and she let out a scream of fustration and anger before turning to her younger brother. "Okay, I feel better. Lets go talk to that wonderful headmaster of ours, shall we?"

Sage threw back his head and laughed for the first time in weeks.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~End Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Death is never easy, no matter how well prepared you are for it." JC climbed to his feet and walked over to her.

"I'm sorry, JC. I'm sorry you have to see me like this." she started pulling out the shoeboxes out of the closet, one at a time, and placed them on the floor beside the bed.

"Hey," JC took her shoulders in his hands and turned her to face him. "You have absolutely nothing to apologize for. I'd think something was wrong if you didn't share the bad times with me. I'm not with you for just the good times."

Mike sighed with a nod, closing her burning eyes against the fatigue of the past few days. She hadn't slept in nearly three days and she was now starting to feel the exhaustion settle into her mind and body. She had done so well ignoring it until now. JC wrapped his arms loosely around her.

"You should try to get some sleep." he finally commented. She nodded silently, pulling away from him to sit down on the bed. JC took a seat behind her, massaging her tensed shoulder muscles. Mike heaved a blissfull sigh, eyes closed and head hanging limply. JC diligently continued kneading her muscles until they became soft and pliant under his fingers. When he was finished, he leaned back against the headboard. Mike rested back into his arms, her back pressed against his chest and rested her head on his shoulder. Soon the pair fell asleep.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The funeral was small, only close friends and family attended the service and burial. The day itself was cool and overcast with clouds accompanied by the feeling of rain. It was almost as if the heavens wanted to weep for earth's loss and their gain. A soft breeze rustled the trees softly, causing everyone to shiver slightly. Sage Anthony Costeo, age twenty, was buried next to his brothers.

The week after the funeral had been a slow one filled with memories and planning for the memorial service and life party. The members of 'N Sync stayed with the Costeo family to help when they could and to support Mike and her family. The night of Sage's Life Party, Mike busied herself with making sure that everything was running smoothly while everyone mingled and had a good time. Katie, Billie and Allison had flown in the night before with Rachel, Devon and Ashley. The six women had helped her set up the party and had kept her sane throughout the last twenty-four hours.

"Hey, you doing alright?" Devon inquired, gazing over at Mike.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Actually, this is helping out a lot." Mike smiled with a nod.

"What is?" Devon raised an eyebrow.

"You guys being here." Mike shrugged as her eyes wandered around the room. All of Sage's friends were milling about the room, talking and laughing.

"Good." Devon nodded as Chris made his way over to them. He took the bag of chips Mike was holding and pointed to the dance floor. She followed his finger and saw JC standing in the middle of everyone, gazing at her.

"Okay, I get the picture." Mike laughed. Chris and Devon smiled at one another as Chris set the bag of chips on a nearby table. He silently held his hand out to her, nodding toward the dance floor. Chris pulled her out onto the dancefloor, wrapping his arms around her and started swaying to the music playing from the sterio system.

I've got a picture of your house

And you're standing by the door

It's black and white and faded

It's looking pretty worn

I see the factory that I worked

Silhouetted in the back

As the memories of greater men

They're really coming back

I don't need to be the king of the world

As long as I'm the hero of this little girl

Heaven isn't too far away

Closer to it every day

No matter what your friends might say

How I love the way you move

And the sparkle in your eye

The music was cut off abruptly, throwing the room into silence. A young man climbed up onto a table, a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. He glanced around the room at the familiar faces crowded around him and sighed heavily.

"Not many of you know who I am, but my name is Travis and I've been Sage's best friend for over four years now." the young man started. "I first met Sage in the hospital four and a half years ago. His mother was having a baby and I was being diagnosed with the HIV virus. We started talking and didn't stop until the next morning. For the next two years, he helped me deal with the fact that I was going to die. He pulled me out of my listless stage, telling me to live what was left of my life to the fullest. We did. Then, days after that conversation, Sage was diagnoise with full blown AIDS. The day before he had found out his girlfriend was pregnant. No one knows how he was infected, whether or not she gave it to him or he gave it to her. His son Tristan was born with HIV and Danielle died on the delivery table. Anyway, Sage instilled in me many different views on life. Live eachof your days like it may be your last. Don't ever regret the decisions and choices you've made. Don't hate anyone because of their ignorance. And never wait until tomorrow or the right time to tell someone how you feel or what you think, because tomorrow or the right time might not come around. I beg of you to remember all that and infuse it into your daily life. I also beg of you to never forget that young man who brought joy into all of our lives and taught us all what it meant to truly live.... and shine."

Mike smiled up at Travis, tears streaming down her cheeks. She gave JC's hand a squeeze before she walked over to the table. Travis reached down and helped her up. She turned and hugged him for a few moments before taking a sip from his drink and turning to the crowd.

"Everyone here knows who I am. I'm the infamous sister who would kick Sage's ass for not living up to his potential. I'd like tot hank you all for coming out here tonight to help celebrate Sage's life. I have with me a letter that he wrote a couple of weeks ago and its addressed to everyone in the room." Mike smiled at everyone, pulling a piece of paper out of her back pocket and unfolding it. She gazed down at the hand written letter for a moment before she started to read. "By now you must be wondering why I've called this meeting. Well, as you well know, I've left this life to continue onto the next level of the game. I have only one regret, that I cannot take you all with me. I've lived a full life, even if it was only twenty years. Trav, you were a brother to me. Don't worry about whether or not I knew that you loved me the same. Deep down, I knew without the words to confirm it. Don't forget to live like there's no tomorrow. Angelica, sweet Angie, you were the true star who taught me how to shine, for that I am eternally grateful. James, you bastard, thank you for the great time in Atlantic City. I won't tell if you won't. Kristie, darling, the one I love to tease. We shall again meet and maybe next time you'll be able to do more than call me a moron and a loser. Eric, rock on dude. Don't stop with the music thing. You're really good and don't let anyone tell you differently. JC, you have the best part of me. My sister. Treat her right and she'll be yours through thick and thin. If you don't, I'll come back and haunt you. To all the others, when you remember me...remember me healthy. And finally, to my sister Mike. You are my sun. You kept me from going off the deep end so many times that I've lost count. I know Tristan will be in good hands with you. I love you, sis. You know that. I'll be on my way to the restuarant at the end of the universe. I'll meet you there in a few decades. I love you. That's it. Always remember him laughing. Its what he wanted."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Logan International Airport buzzed with late night travelers, mostly commuters, while everyone checked in their luggage. Seven to Orlando, one to Los Angelas, one to New Orleans, and one to New York. After everyone checked in, they all walked to the food court to wait for their flights. They laughed and talked for two hours before Billie and Allison had to leave to catch their flights. Not long after, the flight to Orlando was called. Mike and Katie walked JC, Chris, Devon, Jusitn, Lance, Ashley and Joe to their gate.

"I'll see you in a few days." Mike smiled up at JC, fixing the collar on his jacket.

"Okay. You take care." JC returned the smile, gathering her into his arms for a hug.

"I love you." she whispered in his ear.

"I love you, too." he replied in kind before pulling away from her. he kissed her softly then walked over to the ticket agent. Mike discreetly walked a few feet away from Justin and Katie, so they could say their goodbye with some privacy.

"I'll call you tonight. Will you be home?" Justin teased with a raised eyebrow.

"Yeah. There's really no other place I would go." Katie smiled sadly.

"Okay, I'll miss you." Justin kissed her tenderly before disappearing. Katie sighed as she walked over to Mike, who did her best to hide a smile.

"You know, if it was public, so many girls would be crying their hearts out right now." Mike commented offhandedly as they strolled toward the food court again.

"Why's that?" Katie mumbled, raising an eyebrow.

"Because that boy had fallen hard core for you." Mike answered simply with a shrug.

"You've got to be kidding." Katie snorted with a shake of her head.

"I most certainly am not." Mike countered with a laugh. "I know Justin pretty well and I've never seen him like this. Generally he hates talking on the phone, but he's always jumping at the chance to talk to you."

"You're imagining things. He likes me, but not that much." Katie retorted, waving a hand in the air.

"Deny everything. You should work for the government. Look, J's very particular about who he gives his cell phone number to. It took him six months before he finally gave it to me. He gave it to you after only three months so, it has to do with something more than like. His last girlfriend didn't even get the cell phone number." Mike explained, glancing over at the younger woman.

"I still say you're imagining things." Katie mumbled with a sigh.

"okay, don't believe me. But I'm telling you, Justin Timberlake has it bad for you." Mike shrugged nonchalantly. Mike groaned as her cell phone rang. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the maddening object.

"Hello?"

"Hi Mike, it's Justin."

"Hey, what's up? You forget something?"

"Something like that. Is Katie with you?"

"Yeah."

"Can I talk to her for a second?"

"Sure, hold on." Mike laughed, turning to Katie. "It's for you."

"Me?" Katie made a face as she took the phone from her friend. "Hello?"

"I just wanted to say that I've fallen for you and that its more than just a summer fling. Chew on that for a while. I'll talk to you tonight."

Katie opened her mouth to say something, but the dial tone cut her off. She shook her head as she handed the phone back to Mike.

"What was that all about?" Mike inquired with an innocent smile.

"Um, I'm not sure." Katie shrugged.

"I was right, wasn't I?"

"I don't know."

"Yes, you do."

"You might be right."

"I am."

"Maybe."

"Admit it."

"Maybe."

"I am."

"Fine! You're right."

"Thank you."

The End
