Software Synthesizers:

Keyboards are synthesizers that produce sound from information recorded in a Chip. Standard sound Cards have also a chip like this, the problem is that its sound is quite bad. The sound for this built on synth is appears as MPU 401 or Yamaha OPL3 in windows.

High performance and quality cards have a better synth chip which enables them to produce higher sound quality MIDI files but these sound cards are expensive.

It is possible to make software capable to turn the computer into a synthesizer. These programs are called software synthesizers and the provide standard soundcards with a reaslly incredible MIDI sound quality. Of course now the job is being done by the processor that's why these programs ask for a good computer but don't worry, a Pentium 166 can handle the best synthesizers.
