Live and Kicking-November 1996

HAVE YOUR LIVES GONE COMPLETELY BONKERS SINCE WANNABE?

Mel B:Well, we were all mad to start off with! But, yeah, work's got a lot busier. If there's something we don't want to do though, we won't do it.
Mel C:It's because at the very beginning, we managed ourselves, so we've always had control of our lives. And we're not gonna let that go.

CAN YOU STILL POP DOWN THE SUPERMARKET WITHOUT BEING MOBBED?

MB:Yeah, but even if we do get recognized, it doesn't stop us doing normal, everyday things. If all that bothered us we'd end up being hermits!
Geri:I was cought in an embarrassing situation the other day. I went out to but a new duvet and these girls were just standing there watching me. I just had to put it back on the shelf and calmly walk out!!
Emma:But, with us, what you see is what you get. If you bump into us in the supermarket, we're just our normal selves.
G:It's good to meet people in places like that. They're the best kind of people to meet because they'll either tell us we're great or that we're rubbish. They're the best critics, which is important because they're controlling our destiny at the moment.

DO YOU EVER CRITICISE EACH OTHERS LOOKS?

MC:Always, but it's always constructive because we always want the best for each other.
Victoria:I leave it to the other four to tell me if what I'm wearing looks okay. We trust each others opinions.

COULD YOU ALL BE GOOD MATES IF SPICE GIRLS HADN'T HAPPENED?

MB:We are all good mates anyway and we'd have made Spice Girls happen no matter what.
V:Even if nobody liked us, we'd be doing this for ourselves. I'm doing this to make myself and these four happy. Having fun and being successful is a bonus.
G:If everything fails here, we'll probably all go to Bombay or something and jam under the moonlight!

DO YOU EVER GET FED UP WITH EACH OTHER?

MB:Oh yeah, what we've got is a sort of boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. We're very close and brutally honest with each other. It's the best way to be. We learn off each other.
E:I think it's natural anyway for girls to argue.
G:Seeing as we're together so much of the time, we do pretty damn well. We're perfectionists and friends at the same time.

ARE GIRLS BETTER THAN BLOKES?

MB:No, everybody's equal. But girls need to be shown that they're just as good as blokes and achieve whatever they want to.
G:We're trying to express unity, to show how strong girls can be together. That's what we're about, not being better than blokes.

ARE YOU REALLY THOUGH COOKIES THEN, OR IS IT ALL JUST A BIG ACT?

MB:It's not really a case of being tough, it's more knowing what we want and getting it. If you don't feel comfortable with something, you shouldn't do it.
E:We're just saying don't suppress yourself.
MB:We don't want to be intimidating. We're not tough. We just say what we think and act on our instincts.

HOW ROCK'N'ROLL ARE YOU?

MB:We've got Spice rock'n'roll which basically says that if you want to run down a hotel corridor naked, then do it! (NB:This kind of behaviour isn't recommended as you could get arrested!)
G:It's like having a little bit of naughtiness inside you which makes you feel free! We don't do mad things just for the sake of it, or to be nasty or anything though. We're just having fun, that's all.

WHY DO SO MANY GIRLS LIKE YOU?

V:I think it's because from day one we've said we don't want to be sexy, we don't want to be put up there. We want girls to be able to relate to us.
G:We want what we're doing to motivate them. We're doing it for the girls!
MB:Girls have got so many paranoias put on them, all we're saying is get rid of all of that. If you want to be sexy fine, as long as it's not put on and false.

ARE BLOKES SCARED OF YOU?

V:You know what, everybody says, "You must have loads of blokes interested in you", but I haven't.
MB:I think men maybe think that because we're speaking up a bit, we're a bit scary. But if they're cool and calm with themselves, then I can sit down and have a brilliant conversation with them.

ARE YOU ALL MANEATERS?

MB:(Laughs) I dunno. I've been one. We all have.
G:It depends what mood we're in...
MB:And if we're feeling foxy!!

IF EACH OF YOU HAD A DATE WITH A DIFFERENT MEMBER OF BOYZONE, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

G:Well, for one thing they're all taken. They're either going out with Vernie or Easther...
MB:Or they've got kids. We're not really into all of that pop boyfriend scene.

IF YOU WERE GOING OUT WITH SOMEONE FAMOUS WOULD YOU ADMIT IT?

MB:I don't think we'd go out with anyone famous at the moment.
G:We always say that some of us do have boyfriends. If it so happened that one of us was dating a pop star, we'd tell you. It all comes out in the wash anyway.

DID ANY OF YOU FANCY CHRIS EVENS WHEN YOU MET HIM RECENTLY?

MB:I felt a bit sorry for him actually, because he's got so many people dissing him. I bet he's a really nice guy and all of his attitude is a defence.
G:It took guts on his part to come and say, "Hi", after the slagging he'd given us.

IF YOU HAD TO GIVE HIM A MAKEOVER WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

MB:Dye his hair!!
G:Hey, there's nothing wrong with red hair!!
E:We'd give him blond streaks like yours.
MB:And dress him up like MC Hammer.

CHRIS SAID THAT THE SPICE GIRLS SHOULD BE ON LIVE AND KICKING NOT HIS SHOW...

MB:He should break down those barriers, which is what we do all the time. We don't want to be pigeonholed-Spice Girls' music is universal.
G:He should have us on for the shock factor. He obviously hasn't got as much guts as he thinks he has.

NOW THAT WANNABE'S SOLD OVER TWO MILLION DO YOU FEEL HAPPY WITH YOURSEVES?

MBIt's more of a case of having to shout louder from the start.
V:But, there's no room for complacency. We've got a lot to live up to now.
G:Once you meet us you realize that we're normal, whatever "normal" is. We're not airheads and we run our own show. It's hard for some people to digest, but we don't hold it against them. As long as we cause some sort of emotion that's cool.

ARE YOU RICH NOW?

MB:We won't get any money for ages, so no, we're not rich at all.
G:Who knows, this time next year, we might be signing up on the dole - which all of us have had to do before Spice Girls - so in comparison to that we are rich.
MB:(Profoundly) Rich in love and thought.

DO YOU GET TREATED LIKE STARS?

MC:No way! Everybody around us has been there for a while, so they know us for who we are.
G:We're not prima donnas in any way. We'd kick it out of each other if we were!
MB:People meet us and go, "Oh, they're normal. How disappointing!"

WHAT DOES ZIG-A-ZIG-AHH MEAN?

MB:It can mean anything you want it to mean. It can be something rude or pleasant. It's just a little saying!

ARE YOU LOT EVER QUIET?

MB:(Laughs) It goes in fits and starts.
E:A couple of us may be quiet while the rest of us are being loud. We give each other room.
MB:Together we want to give our best to people out there. And if being loud is the best way of doing that, we're gonna give it our all.

ERM, WHAT IF I WANTED TO "GET WITH YOU", AS YOU SING, WHAT WOULD I HAVE TO DO?

MB:Big laughs You'd have to say, "I really like you. How's about going out?" Simple as that. I mean there's no point in beating about the bush is there?
