Welling United...background info
I am one of the saddest people around in that not only do I live in the cultural vacuum of SouthEast London / NorthWest Kent but because of this I support Welling United. Actually the term 'support' is incorrect. I go to their games out of habit in order to see my equally sad mates who I know will be there, just like me. We certainly don't go for the football, because it's crap. It's just an excuse to shout a lot and occasionally have a laugh and a piss-up. Away trips near any coastline are a good excuse for long weekends comprising motorways, beer, B&B's and a night-club or two. Sadly these trips are becoming rarer as money, girlfriends and the prospect of actually having to see Welling play at some stage are discouraging even the old faithful. It seems far too long since we all ran amok in Blackpool, Weymouth, Great Yarmouth, Manchester and Newcastle.
Welling are a pathetic shower of toss. We are embroiled in a relegation battle every season. We rarely have a decent F.A. Cup run and constantly get knocked out of the 87 other meaningless cup competitions we enter by teams playing at a lower level. We don't get anywhere in the F.A. Trophy. We never actually buy players - we just sign them on a free transfer from teams two leagues below us. We concede late winners with monotonous regularity. Our ground is a shithole with an open air toilet. There is absolutely no ambition at the club at all. We don't play attractive football, even by GM Vauxhall Conference standards (which are piss-poor). Oh, and too many of our supporters are shambling pikeys. It's more depressing than you can believe. And nothing ever changes.
I will be trying to keep this page fairly up to date with info on what's been happening, and what we've been up to or are planning, including information about and articles from the Welling United fanzine "Winning Isn't Everything" (my mate Dave Fitchett is the editor) . It's pretty good as fanzines go... probably better than the club deserves actually. If you're feeling tempted to write in, please do as we receive very few contributions from anyone other than a bunch of 4 or 5 diehard regulars and we often struggle to keep it all going as a result of this. Hooray !! It's another relegation battle !!
Thursday 10th July
The season is over and summers here (well it's supposed to be, but the weather is shite). And if you really think that I spent any of my time thinking about Welling during the close season then you're bloody mad. It's bad enough when they're actually playing. No, I'll be spending my time getting pissed at summer festivals and Grand Prix so there's no Welling news here for some time. I'll post an update when the new season gets under way (and not before). Have a good summer. See you when the dross begins again.

Hednesford 0 Welling 3 (yes, 3)
This result was bloody well needed - a loss would've left us in the relegation zone with 2 games left. Not that I ever doubted the lads for a second of course.O.K. I wasn't actually there - it's one of those fixtures that I miss every season for some reason. I suppose it's just written in the scriptures that I shall never see Hednesford's ground. I'm sure it's really great, just like all the others in the Conference (including ours). Another update coming soon I hope, haven't had the time to keep this as up to date as I would like , but there you go.

Against my better judgement I drove 250 miles to Stalybridge on Saturday to see a rousing 0-0 draw and one of the most impressive collections of weirdo supporters I've come across. (And I've been to some bloody sad old places!) Honestly, I expected to see Molder and Scully wandering about the place is was so weird. Still, I've been there now, and I don't have to go back.
Can't remember much about the game, because as usual I tried to pay as little attention to it as possible. But I do seem to remember thinking that Stalybridge were every bit as crap as we are. The other teams in the relegation area all got similar results so not much change at the bottom of the table.
Surprise, my car's still knackered. Aren't cars great? .

Despite having seen two Welling games in four days I've made the ridiculous decision to drive to Stalybridge on Saturday. There are three main reasons for this:
I will update this page with details of this foolish trip next week

The bizarrely named Rushden & Diamonds completed the double over us on Tuesday night by beating us 1-0 at home. There's nothing unusual about someone doing this, except that in this case we deserved to have beaten them in both games! The jammy gits. They may have a lorry load of money and an excellent ground and facilities but the team is still a bag of shite.
Still, they got the points, and that means we're in trouble again. At least the game was brightened up by an extremely mad woman walking past the ground in the dying minutes of the game. Most strange. Oh yeah, and someone in the crowd had a laser. That was funny n'all.
Fri 21st Mar
We were looking unusually safe before I went away on holiday at the start of March so it was reassuring to see that by the time I returned on 20th we had dropped a couple of places to become embroiled in our usual end of season fight for survival. Whilst I was away it seems that we lost every match and the only goals we scored were courtesy of the opposition. "Own Goal" is now one of our top scorers !
Joking aside, it's actually rather bloody tiresome and predictable. We could and should be safe. I won't comment on why we're not as I was on the other side of the world and certainly not thinking about Welling United when all this happened but it came as no surprise when I was informed of our sparkling form on my return. Oh yeah, and a little tip for you...if you're trying to get over post -holiday blues DON'T go to Park View Road to cheer yourself up.
