The Rutles.
One way of looking at this is a band from an alternate universe, a look at what had to happen anyway. The music HAD to come!
Or you can look at it as a wonderful English parody of The Fab Four. A masterpiece created in the Monty Python style as only Eric Idle could achieve.
Either way it is a wonderful tribute to the Beatles and all they did.
I spent nearly 6 years trying to get a copy of the original TV special, or even to see it. A friend of mine had the original soundtrack on Vinyl, the package that came with a booklet. He dubbed me a copy on cassette and the music baffled me. I truly appreciated the humor in the parodies of the songs, but what kind of show was it? After 5 years I was able to get a copy of the soundtrack on CD from Blockbuster Music when Rhino re-released it. This release had more songs on it and I was determined to see the show. Comedy Central aired it several times, but I'd always find out about it the next day as people asked me if I'd seen it.
Finally one day I was in Media Play and decided to try another futile attempt to find it. After trying to special order it for years I saw it lying there. I bought it and watched it with much anticipation. I saw how the casual Beatles fan could derive humor from the parallels in The Rutles and The Beatles, but the parody went so deep that I was pulling out my reference books to compare the difference. Truly an outstanding job.
Not long after that I found a copy of it on CD-ROM released by Motion Pixels.
For some reason I had missed the news of the upcoming Archeology, and found it by chance one day at Music For A Song. As soon as I listened to it I went straight for the WWW and to all the info I could find. Again The Rutles had blown me away with their humorous tribute to the Beatles.
