Big Daddy
Sgt.Pepper's
One of the best yet most overlooked tributes to not only the greatest band of all time but also the greatest album of all time.
The concept of this album is that Sgt. Pepper was released in the style of the great 50's rockers such as Buddy Holley and the Big Bopper. Since hearing it I get a sense of a Sliders episode in which Be-Bop never went out of style, girls still wear poodle skirts, and the Beatniks are the weirdo's. Yet Sgt. Pepper was still released! A group effort of those rockers that made us twist (again) and for some reason hadn't died in plane crashes. But that’s just me.
I first heard about this album by reading a review in the back of Rolling Stone Magazine. It didn't get a very good review. I wanted to hear this album, but couldn't find it. One day I was looking at The Beatles section at Blockbuster Music and glanced over to see Big Daddy. This was several years later, so I didn't remember the magazine article until I saw the cover of the CD. Even this is an inspired tribute to the original.
The Track Listing matches the original, and highlights include:
Jerry Lee Lewis singing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
An Accapela rendition of Sgt. Pepper
A variation of Good Morning, Good Morning that includes several other Beatle Titles in the lyrics
A Beatnik version of Within You Without You
Buddy Holly Singing A Day In The Life complete with a plane crash at the end
I believe this would get the approval of the Fab Four who can see their Crowning Achievement in the style of those who inspired them.
