Xa brief introduction and explanation:

Established 1996. Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA.

SIGNALBLEED is a recording project based largely on artistic concepts set forth by the DADA art movement. Some of these concepts include: Chance, Intuition, Random Juxtaposition, Irrationality, Naivety, and Contradiction. The process of recording music based on such concepts is very experimental in nature. The music resulting from such an approach to recording and performance is therefore unpredictable and widely varying in structure and quality. You will likely notice this when you listen to my recordings.

I chose the name SIGNALBLEED based on several occurences that seem to illustrate exactly some of the concepts listed above, which have taken root in my mind and often guide my creative energies. The first occurence involved the bleeding of AM radio signals through a guitar amplifier. When conditions are wrong in just the right way, such an electronic device can pick up signals intended for other receivers. I have a recording of one particular instance when a friend took advantage of these conditions, and created a colorful mix of manipulated radio and guitar sounds. Although a similar and more controlled sound picture could be created by layering processed AM radio signals on a multi-track recorder, this particular recording is a documentation of an event that could be considered transcendental and/or spiritual.

Some would argue that such events are creative collaborations between human spirits and external, unseen forces. Such could be a conclusion drawn from the second most distinct occurence of signal-bleed that i can remember. This one happened during a church worship service. As the musicians played and the congregation sang, a stray radio signal brought violins into the mix. Unlike the usual bleeding of CB radio comments throught the PA system, this one was a beautiful accent to the music already being played.

These are just two examples of the daily audio events which, along with the works of the Dadists, have inspired me to make recordings. Through SIGNALBLEED, it is my intent to recognize, facilitate, participate in, document, and/or simulate these types of musical events. On this homepage, I try to provide documentation of the progress I make as well as access to the resources I draw upon. Please email me with any questions or comments.
