EVER
A Big Shoe Production
A Film by Brett James
16mm
Black and White
Running time: 35 minutes
At the first screening, the first film by Chapel Hill filmmaker, Brett
James comes off as confusing
as a David Lynch film. It's only after watching EVER for the second
time do you begin to realize the
symbolism that James' has captured while telling the story of a woman caught
within herself.
EVER, follows the few days in the life of Elizabeth Loeb (actress Coco Palmer) who is unknowingly
cutting herself off from the world and the people she loves. The story unfolds quickly, backed by a disturbing
sound track of a phonograph in the fun-out groove, continuously playing in the background. James' method of
filmmaking with his brillant use of the stationary camera and semingly every day coverage converge into a
beautiful montage that drives the main focus of the story home. We watch from the voyeurs point of view as
Elizabeth makes decisions, that we all know will result in her downfall in the end. During the entire film, you
want to scream at her to stop and think about what she is doing.
The question the film forces you to think about is simple. When you say you want to be alone, is
that what you really want??? Does anyone know what it truly is to be "alone"??? EVER brings you all of this
and more.
