--Why did Milo leave the band both times?
In 1983 to go to college, and in 1987 to go back to school, eventually leading to a doctorate degree in biochemistry.
--What is Milo Doing now?
He's a Biochemist at the University of Wisconsin
--What's ALL?
When Milo left in 1987 to pursue science, the remaining members of the Descendents (Karl, Bill, Stephen) changed the name to ALL and recruited Dave Smalley (now sings for Down By Law) on vocals. He recorded 2 albums with them and then left. Next they recruited Scott Reynolds (now in Goodbye Harry) to sing until 1993, and when he left, they recruited Chad Price (still in the band). --Have any of the Descendents/ALL been in any other bands?
See the family tree to find out. They also have a recording studio called "The Blasting Room", and Stephen and Bill produce a lot of bands records, like Chemical People, Doughboys, Left Insane, Bulimia Banquet, Shades Apart, Mustard Plug, Trigger Happy, Serpico (when they were called Sleeper, Stephen Egerton plays guitar on one track), Hagfish, Pollen, The Lemons, Alligator Gun, Judge Nothing, Bodyjar, Big Drill Car, and The Distractions.
--Why did ALL leave Interscope? Why didn't you go back to SST?
They did a poor job promoting Pummel. Both Descendents and ALL are now on Epitaph
We made 15 records with SST/Cruz. They are a great label and they're like family to us. We just wanted to try something different - no big deal.
--Where are Scott Reynolds and Dave Smalley? Do you guys still talk?
Scott lives in New York with his wife. He has a band called "Goodbye Harry" on Cruz Records. We talk to Scott pretty often. Dave lives in Los Angeles and has a band on Epitaph called "Down By Law", we keep in fairly close contact with Dave.
--Do you know where we can get bootleg copies?
No. And we suggest that you don't support bootlegs either. Aside from the monetary issue (i.e. some third party making money from our efforts without paying us anything) there is the real issue at hand - the fact that they have embarrased us publicly by releasing a piece or pieces of work that we did not intend for people to hear. Usually when we don't release something, it's for the simple reason that we think it sucks and don't want anyone to hear it. Bootleg is similar to rape.
--Was the Descendents the idea of Bill mainly?
Milo: Actually, Frank named the Descendents, and initially it was just him and Dave Nolte jamming in Dave's garage. Once Bill and Tony joined, it started to actually go somewhere (live shows, the "Ride the Wild" single). Definitely, Bill was the "leader" of the band and made a huge creative contribution. I thought it was great to have someone like Bill who would "take charge" and
motivate, but at the same time not be a fascist on the creative side. By this I mean that we ALL wrote songs for the Descendents and no one person had veto power.
--Did you leave the Descendents on good terms?
Milo: We're definitely still good buddies, especially Bill and I. Bill was very understanding about my leaving the band; he knows my true nature, i.e. that I am an academic (i.e. nerd) at heart. I think we both live vicariously through each other; Bill would have liked to finish college and do more learning, and I definitely miss music, so we kind of root each other on. Milo still does backing vocals on some of the ALL records and wrote "Just Like Them" on Allroy Saves. Of course at this point he also is doing the Descendents.
