Raya Carmen Alonso
"I would never reveal Jem's secret to a pack of jackals like you!"
Raya Carmen Alonso was a shy and talented young girl who's father always told her that she could do anything as long as she tried hard enough. "A loser is someone who never tries, Raya", he would say. It was this very slogan and a push from her father that persuaded Raya to try out for Jem and the Holograms' "Talent Search". Under the pretense of delivering orchids from his greenhouse business, Mr. Alonso got his daughter in the front door after all the other finalists had left. It was his persistance in his daughter's abilities that caused Jem to consent to Raya's trying out.
Raya had been up against some stiff competition but made it to the semi-finals. There, she competed with another hot drummer and semi-finalist, Craig Phillips. After their initial performance, and quite by accident, Raya discovered the secret of JEM's dual identity as Jerrica Benton, but kept it to herself. It wasn't easy, however. Eric Raymond, seeing Raya as the weak link in the chain to Jerrica, attempted to bribe her with a recording contract and all the "fame" she could handle. All she had to do was to tell him JEM's secret identity. Raya would tell him nothing, however.
Jetta, of the Misfits, had Raya's father's nursery destroyed as an incentive for the eldest Alonso daughter to give them what they wanted. Eric, then, would offer to pay for all the damages in exchange for Jem's secret. Again, Raya refused and discovered the plot on her own. This only steeled her resolve to be true to Jem and the Holograms whether she was a member of the band, or not.
Through everything, Raya's moral center and her family's unwavering support kept her strong. She won the Talent Search and became the Hologram's new drummer. At first, Raya's shy side kept her unsure of herself amidst the beautiful people Jem and company encountered. She was also unsure of her abilities but the new family she found in the Holograms helped her overcome a great deal of this shyness. She made quite the impression on the "beautiful people" and soon won the hearts of millions as the Hologram's newest member and hottest drummer.
With her fantastic talent and big Heart, she keeps the beat of the Holograms going strong!
