Special Session news

The Special Session of the UN General Assembly on HIV/AIDS concluded late Wednesday 27 June, when the 189 General Assembly members approved the 20-page Declaration of Commitment.

UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot addressed the General Assembly Monday 26 June. Read his statement here. Speakers' statements are posted on the UN Special Session "Live coverage" webpage.

UN Security Council welcomes Declaration

28 June 2001 – The United Nations Security Council has welcomed the Declaration of Commitment adopted yesterday by the Special Session of the General Assembly on HIV/AIDS and praised the practical measures contained in the document.



Top businesses pledge to act on HIVAIDS

Leaders of some of the world’s biggest companies announced their commitments to fight the global AIDS epidemic, following a meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 26 June.



Fifty-eight countries to boost HIV/AIDS care and treatment

25 June 2001 – Efforts to improve and speed up access to care for people living with HIV/AIDS are gaining new momentum, UNAIDS said today.



Vigorous leadership and adequate resources prerequisites to fighting HIV/AIDS

21 June 2001 – The magnitude of the AIDS effort requires vigorous leadership and additional resources, according to the report "Together we can" released today by UNAIDS.


Database of HIV/AIDS-related titles is now on line

Stage One of a new UNAIDS bibliographic database of information related to HIV/AIDS published by UN organizations is now available for browsing on line.
