FREIGHTHOUSE SQUARE

Tacoma's Public Market!!

When the Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad ceased operations in the Pacific Northwest in 1980, it's immense Tacoma freighthouse sat neglected for several years. Then in 1986, Tacoma business-man L. Keith Stone saw potential in the structure located along East 25th St. and decided to convert it into a public market. In July 1987, Freighthouse Square opened it's doors for business. The market has grown to encompass more than 70 small businesses, ranging from fresh flowers, produce and seafood, to clothing boutiques, art galleries, specialty coffees, candy, jewelry, handicrafts, books, collectibles, and imported ethnic gifts. It offers some of the most offbeat and original shops you're likely to find anywhere. The market is also very popular for it's International Food Court, where one can savor Mexican, Filipino, Mediterranean, Vietnamese, Thai, Southern barbecue and vegetarian entrees for lunch or dinner. Each restaurant is individually owned, and many menus offer items for calorie and health conscious folk. For a treat, forget the calories and enjoy the most unforgettable cinnamon rolls in Tacoma, which are baked fresh daily there. The market's decor preserves the heritage of the old Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad (the "Milwaukee Road"). Maps, photos, memorabilia, and paintings of one of the nation's major transcontinental railroads decorate the walls, providing a fascinating history lesson. Freighthouse Square is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Many special events such as Mardi Gras, Cinco de Mayo, Summerfest, and Octoberfest are celebrated annually, and other festivities are squeduled frequently, including monthly Caboose Club events for children. Freighthouse Square is located one block north of the Tacoma Dome at East 25th Street and East "D" Street. From Interstate 5, take the city center exit and follow the signs to the Tacoma Dome. Free parking is available. For more information, call (253)272-2011.
