Minor injuries in I81 crash Minor injuries were reported in a one-vehicle crash that occurred about 12:42 a.m. Saturday along Interstate 81 in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County. State police at Frackville said Alexia Lynn Swope, 19, of Watertown, N.Y., was driving her 1993 Chevrolet Geo Metro southbound when she fell asleep behind the wheel and the car went onto the berm. The vehicle traveled along the berm a distance before hitting several large rocks, then impacted with an embankment. After striking the embankment with the driver's side, the vehicle rotated in a counterclockwise direction and impacted with the embankment a second time on the passenger side causing the car to roll onto its roof. The vehicle then slid down the berm on its roof for about 185 feet where it came to rest. Swipe was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital, Pottsville, where she was treated and released. Damages to the car were severe. Assisting troopers at the scene were volunteers from the Ryan Township and Hometown fire companies and the Mahanoy City ambulance corps. |
