John Trippel's Artist Statement

My purpose lately has been to show what I like about the world I'm living around. For a long time, I've been one who looked out and saw nothing but absurdity. A life without consistency was very meaningless, and so I recently moved away from doing nothing but caricatures to doing buildings that I found attractive.

In my caricatures, I want to express not only the absurdity that life sometimes has, but also some of the humorous people involved in that life I live. Granted, these people are all fictitious in that they are all imaginary and strictly out of my sick-self, but they are fun too. These paintings are meant only to evoke a laugh from the viewers, not to teach someone a lesson or much worse, to point a finger at any particular part of society. No, although absurd in their nature, they are meant to evoke a laugh from you.

In the past I have used my canvasses to be a lesson ground, but I have found that mere humor can be a great relief from the pressures of the world, and this is all that I want the caricatures to do.

The building or city scapes are meant to be pleasing to the eye of the viewer. These were all done on location on the downtown mall and other places around Charlottesville. Many people spoke to me while I was painting these paintings and they made it fun and gave me a greater appreciation for the gift of having the ability and time in my life to do these cityscapes.

Thanks for looking,
