Winter scent

Drape garlands of scented pine cones over radiators to release their delicious scents. Tie your cones in a line with dark-coloured cotton and then soak overnight in around 150 ml water to which you have added 25-30 drops of essential oil. Warming winter scents might include cedarwood, cinnamon, ginger, clover and geranium. Add a few bright ribbons and place on the radiator. You will need to resoak them every week to keep the scent fresh.

Or simply throw some pine cones or sprigs on the fire if you are lucky enough to have a fireplace.

Traditional mulled wine

  • 2 bottles red wine
  • 8-12 tbsp brandy, according to taste
  • 1 clementine and 1 lemon sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 25 g soft brown sugar
  • 300 ml water
Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and heat gently for about 15 minutes (keep a close eye on it to ensure it does not boil). Serve when hot.
