This pages purpose is to try and give some insight to how I draw, and also if your interested, to show you how my sketches progress.
The example I am using is something that I am currently drawing, Ryan Shuck from Orgy. I am basically scanning the picture after everytime I have made a radical advancement in the drawing, then telling you what I have done to get there so far. I have also put a smaller version of the actual picture I am drawing, so you can compare. But also remember I have been drawing for five years and it took hours of practise and determination. I only got "good" in the last two years, I get better everytime I draw something, because you learn something new.
Yes I know, it looks a little funny right now....
I look at the Real picture of Ryan, and line up in my head were abouts it would be on the blank peice of paper in front of me, I roughly draw that.
Using the guitar as a center peice I try to draw his body around it, thinking all the time- "Is it arm that far away from the guitar? Is that the right angle? If thats at the right angle then why does the neck seem so far away? I always ask myself those questions, and they help me to get things in proportion first.
I then roughly draw the bits inside the outter body shape I have drawn of Ryan, I roughly think about how far up from another part of his body it has to be in order for it to be in line, just drawing bits and peices at first, not trying to waste energy on getting everything right at once.
Then I take a poor attempt to line up the face. Always remember that The top of the forhead, to the eyebrows is the same distance as from the eyebrows to the bottom of the nose, bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin, however that can vary if their face is at a weird angle and they have their mouth open, like he does in the Picture. That is why there is lines going all over his face.
I take a coffee break, that is important, because I am addicted to it and it is giving me a headache not having a dosed up amount of caffine in my system. No actaully, it is important to take a break, your eyes can get tired and thus, distorting the picture, making it look better than what is really is. LOL.
I draw a bit more of the "innards" of Mr Shuck, throwing in shading, and even lineing the shadow up as well. Neary every single picture I have drawn has some form of shadow. Some see it as being insignificant, but thats were you can tell the difference because its that extra peice of detail, which can make all the difference.
I use my rubber, which is extra soft, to rub out smudged bits on his face to make them lighter, adding contrast to the shadow on his checks. I have also realigned his eyes, I relised that they needed to go slightly lower, and the same with his nose. His lips are so far retarded, there not much I can do right now about that.
I Fill in his hair, darken his neck, and throw in more lines across his chest and neck. I widen the shading on his arms and start being really picky about where everything is positioned.
Some dark smudge has appeared on his guitar, and to my horror, I find our that I can erase it, it is for some reason stuck there. I dont really feel like starting over again over a little smudge, I guess I will hafta deal with it.
I start to get extremely picky here. I finish up on his leg, do more to the eyes, make even more of a mess of his lips, straighten shadow.
I get pissed off with drawings lines up his guitar, so I rub them out and decide to draw his hands first. Which is a much better idea.
I am hopeless, absolutly hopeless at hands, I am learning that better now so its good practise to do his hands next. I think the trick is to not make them so straight edged, and find some form of shadow in them. Um I try anywayz. I have moved the creases in his arms up furthur, because thats where it needs to be.
At first with drawing the strings I thought I'd be a smart ass and colour in the fret board and rub in what would be the strings. Then I figure thats a bad idea and try to draw them, I cant get them straight enough or thin enough. I have had enough with that for the moment.
I relise his eyebrows need fixing up AGAIN so they get fixed..
The guitar bit. Yes I finally them strings done, pretty straight too, not bad. I am starting on the frets by rubbing out a straight line down the fret board. You can also see that nasty ass smudge on the top right hand side of his guitar. IIIIIEEEEKKK!!
Now you can see I have added the other hand and all the frets. I fixed more of his face up, and added more creases to his clothes. I do that by shading in the lines the rubbing in a lighter line directly above the shaded line. I hope that isnt confusing. I have shaded right around him now. Its nearly finished. I also made the shadow below his right hand darker. I relise that on the leg (the one you can see most of) the pads thangs look really un-co and not very straight, so they get fixed up.
After more than 48hrs all up, downing more than 20 cups of coffee during drawings hours, a quarter of a 6b pencil and one quarter of a 2b pencil, the rest of my rubber its finally finished. It never turns out perfect, your very lucky if it does. I am usually not happy with how it turns out because I get too picky I guess, I find faults in my work very quickly. Anywayz I managed to fix them eyebrows once and for all, they needed to be bended down more. I added the rest of creases in his shirt by lining up in my head how far away it would hafta be- believe me when I say that they are soooo not in proportion. With all the little lines going around the place, it was a wee too confusing for myself :b
My next work of art is back onto the Korn Poster once again! I am also starting Janman and another portrait of Korn (its okay peoples this ones only A4 size)
