Bangkok, Thailand - December 4, 2003

Tonight I went back down to Ko Sahn Road again. Its totally and completely differnet in the nighttime than it ever was before. They close the entire street off to traffic, and the streets are filled with just about everything you can imagine - and mostly people. People everywhere!

We found a disco off the main street, it was the opposite of what we found on the streets. The streets were mostly filled with a lot of young drunk foreigners. In the disco, it was mostly filled with hip and subdued young Thais everywhere. Exact opposite of the streets. Why they didn't intermix on the streets or more foreigners in the discos, was a complete mystery to me. But I was quite fine with that. I enjoyed being one of the few foreigners hanging around in there, although it was extremely packed and very difficult to get drinks or even move around at all in there.

I also took a walk down to where I had stayed previously seven years ago, only to find the place had been built up quite abit in recent years. More and more guesthouses and restaurants were expanding everywhere in the area. Before I had been on the fringe of things, but I see its just a part of the action as well. There was also a Buddhist temple nearby that I use to walk across at nighttime to get to Ko Sahn Road. That had now been closed. I told this to a Thai person who was with me at the time, and they said it was for the best, as Buddhist temples have a lot of spirits and ghosts walking about at nighttime, so there is no reason I should be going through there anyhow.

Down by the river, which I use to take river boat taxis to get to the main central post office, was also built up quite a bit. There was walkways lining the river now, and it was quite a beautiful stroll in this area. I was very impressed with the views of the various bridges and the city in this area. Quite another change from last time as well. Bangkok seems to either have changed for the positive quite a bit, or I really missed out on all the best parts of Bangkok the previous time I was here.

One other note, I was able to meet this one American girl and her Thai boyfriend named Ot while walking down the streets of Ko Sahn Road. I had to say hello to her, as I'm actually a very big fan of her webblog and her ex-boyfriend's webblog. Both of them have been in Thailand for about a year, and wrote about it almost daily. Their writing and everything about them had quite impressed me, and it was amazing to meet one of the two in person. I've read every entry of her journal, so I felt like I knew her almost like a celebrity, which she kind of it to me. Her website is right here and her ex-boyfriend is Cire doing his own thing. Great reading though and I was very happy to have met the woman and her new boyfriend Ot. I would have loved more to talk more with her. I think it was strange for her to have someone who reads her often talking to her in person. I've had that experience from time to time on my own website, and its quite interesting experience to say the least. Particularly since I forget about 95% of what I write, and quite amazed that other people seem to remember almost everything - or so it seems.
