Pennsylvania- June 12, 1988
The next morning I woke up, put some gasoline in the car and hit the road to see downtown Pittsburgh. I drove by Three-Rivers stadium, found a parking spot and began walking around a little bit. I was surprised to see all the corporate businessmen all along the park lawns in the summertime sun. It was a nice sight. From there, I found my way along the rivers and followed them for awhile. At one spot, I saw some construction workers on their lunch break blocking the narrow path under a bridge between a wall and the river. As I walked by, one of the guys said 'check out this guy' and another 'lets push him in the river'.. 'hey you wanna take a swim?'.. I was a bit nervous, but stood my ground, and just walked through by them inches away from the river. Nice welcome to Pittsburgh though.
After the morning and early afternoon passed by, I hit the open road eastward along I-76 eastward bound. One of my most prominent memories of the trip was stopping at a roadside McDonalds and saw my first Muslim-dressed couple. I'd never seen a real actual fully-garbed Muslim before, and I couldn't help but be curious. They were a family, and I was mesmorized. I definetely wasn't in small-town Michigan anymore.
From there I continued along the rolling Pennsylvania hills bound for Philadelphia!! That night I found another campground, which was next to alot of partiers yelling and getting drunk in the woods. I was sweating to death in the back of the pickup truck, and being eaten alive by mosquitos. It wasn't easy to sleep at all that night.. and nowhere really to go.. as I didn't want to walk around the campground and let people know there was some kid sleeping in this vehicle on his own.
Wow, Pennsylvania, again!
