Dalat, Vietnam
January 8, 2001
Just recently left Nha Trang, and went to the mountain city of Dalat. Its a university town in the coolness of the mountains. Always spring-like temperatures here.
In this place, my travel friends have become pretty large. In Nha Trang it was mostly a British guy and myself at the same place, and we'd hang out with a few other travelers, some British, Australians, and a Kiwi (New Zealander)
Now in Dalat, its still me and the British guy, but we also met a German guy and a Chinese girl (each traveling separately, so we formed a bigger group. Also in the same hostel, I met two Korean girls from Masan. They were surprised I'm teaching in Korea, and we became to get to know each other quickly, and I practiced what little Korean language I knew from my classes. They were pretty cool girls. So then there was six of us taking in the sights and sounds of Dalat in the mountains of Vietnam.
Actually it was kind of funny, because before we met the two Korean girls, I was trying to tell everyone how much fun Korea is, and how much people drink and the nightlife is really good. Later the first night, after we met the Korean girls for the first time, we saw them later in a restaurant eating dinner and drinking a bottle of SoJu (its like a bottle of vodka). Everyone was kind of surprised, and then they kind of had a better idea of what I was talking about when I told them that people drink alot in Korea! Kind of funny.
The rest of us, especially the British and German guy and myself had been drinking alot of beer in the evenings and swapping stories.
Dalat was kind of interesting. We saw lots of waterfalls, some pagodas, and different tourist stuff. My favorite place was an artist place called the Crazy House. There were tons of avante-garde, kind of alice in wonderland kind of structures to the architecture. Lots of winding trails and stairs and strange rooms. It was my favorite place in the city. Now its time to go back to Saigon!
