The mind is man's most precious gift. I came upon this revelation years ago; the concept is not new to me. I have always yearned to create; I want to mold things with my mind and use them as tools to open uncharted waters in the depths of human consciousness. Normal classrooms are sometimes a tedious chore: they task me; thus, my education has been frustrating. I complete my assignments, but I long to achieve more. Last year, my English teacher encouraged me to take the English Advanced Placement test; I must admit that I was a bit worried and anxious. I have never had any trouble writing, but this was a real test of my analytical skills. I took the test, and put it out of my mind for a few weeks. When the results came I was shocked; I truthfully felt the printed number must have been wrong. Had I finally proved to myself the worth of my literary mind? I believe so. The five on the A.P. test was my wakeup call; at long last, I have discovered what my calling is in life: to write. The end of high school and the beginning of college is marked with change. Change in attitude, change in housing, and change in lifestyle. I want to embrace this change; I welcome it. The BIC program offers the most interesting way to change: it is a change from topic-oriented classroom discussion to conceptual philophisizing. I have experienced only a small sampling of such a learning process; ironically, this was in the form of a small lunch group, separated and completely independent from the school. It was here that I learned the most important lessons from school, not in the classroom. This is one of the key reasons that I want to be in the BIC program: the small number of students allows for much more complex, involving discussions of all topics. I know that God has called me to be a writer; I do not know how exactly this goal shall be realized, but I do know it is my final destination. As I have already observed from years of reading, a good writer must base his fiction on factual evidence. The BIC offers the most comprehensive explication of the factual world that is offered at Baylor. College is the perfect structured opportunity to gather information that can be used for the purpose of writing. As a student at Baylor University, I want to maximize the amount of education I receive in what will be my too short time there. The Baylor Interdisciplinary Core is logically the best way to do so; it offers a comprehensive look at all of life's important topics while subconsciously preparing students for the ultimate reality of life outside of school. The BIC is the key to the gateway of "the undiscovered country;" not, as Shakespeare names it, the realms of the afterlife, but the realms of the human mind: the ability to open one's mind unto new and exciting experiences, and consequentially enable the bearers of such minds to grow beyond common human comprehension. This is why I wish to join the BIC program: my mind is ready and willing to unlock the gate. All I need is the key.
