The Spiritual Journey

"Foreshadowing...." June 5, 2000

Early Late Evening...

....and upon stealing a glaze past the monitor to the second floor window on the other side of the room, I notice that the sun sets. At the core of a million different hues, each varying shades of orange, red, yellow, fuschia, blue, is the firey nucleus which is almost invisibly making its way further west than my horizon can tolerate. Travelling eastward in its wake is a shadow blanket moving with the expedient uniformity of rehearsed soldiers, overtaking all in its path, covering all things with a blank darkness.

I find peace in that darkness. The blanket offers me comfort.

The days are getting warmer after over a week of cold cloud cover and intemittent rain. The dampness was good for the foliage, which seemed to spring forth almost overnight in full force, coating the trees with a multitude of greens, and the occasional red offered by a handful of china maples. Lilacs are in full bloom, filling the air with their fragrant, pungent, devine scent, and as well one's car while driving with the windows down.

When not trying to be a handful, The Goddess has been busy puttering in our small patch of turned and fertilized earth we like to fancy a garden. While only a scad few feet by few feet, it is a start. It is manageable for two nature novices. It is actually two patches, one on each side of our step, and I have visions of the assorted wildflowers, morning glory, cosmos, lavender, dill, basil, rosemary, cumin, coriander, and thyme that are already transplanted sprouts that we started inside. To watch them grow bit by bit, to watch them live, feels like such a privilege. Next year, we will, too, have roses from the bush my Mother-in-Law gave us a couple weeks ago.

My full day schedule for the school is slowly winding down; teachers have outdoor activities in progress, and the young ones just have little interest left in learning more about managing their anger and the value of sharing. They would rather be hanging from the monkey bars, diging in for a good pitch, jumping rope, riding their bikes, or reading under a tree.

It was a good year overall, and more than one person in the community has complimented me for the work I did to help in the kids' accomplishments. A great thing about intervention work: when one wins, everyone wins. And my work is not done. I have a full summer program in the works for all the kids I had over the school year. Part of it will be maintenance. Most of it will be just plain old fashioned fun: swimming, hiking, playing with Reekie and Moo.

Summer never looked so good........
