Crater Lake Summer Trip
February 2000
A group of around 13 HVTC members travelled up to Ruapehu in February 2000 to walk to the crater lake. The weather was cool and misty as you can see.

Above the cloud we could see Alpine Hut as we looked down the mountain.

At the summit lies Dome Hut. Dome is only used in emergencies and usually is covered in snow. Underneath lies equipment measuring volcanic activity.

A small lake is forming at the side of the crater.

This is the main crater lake, grey with ash. You can see a yellow sulphur slick across the middle and on some of the steep sides of the lake.

Naturally, the most popular trip leader is the one with a hot tub at home.

And everybody is an expert on where we should go.

And sometimes, you wish you had brought your bike.
