"Exposure brings life
to the image." An intriguing yet, appropriate phrase to encapsulate the
purpose of making and displaying photographs. This phrase was emblazoned on a
poster with a scene of a photographic studio session which still hangs in my
home today. It left it's impression, giving focus to my creative eye. You can
take ordinary elements of the everyday and give them moods and feelings, it's
all in how you expose them and the angles you use. A lesson I would not like to
forget.

"It's been about 10 years since I took
my first photography class and I hope to never stop learning and trying new
things. I started off mostly doing work in Black & White. I enjoyed
experimenting with various types of Black & White films and printing
papers. Learning to control and exploit grainsize was fascinating to me. You
could create and capture a multitude of effects and moods. I then moved on to
Black & White Infrared films and have never lost my enthusiasm for them.

You
can come up with a variety of effects, depending on how you expose this film.
It makes trees and plants come out white and scenes appear dreamlike, ethereal,
and surreal; or you can use high contrast filters to lend drama to a scene
while still giving a soft glow to elements of the image. I then moved on to see
what Color films had to offer. I hadn't thought them to be as artistic as Black
& White, but am learning they can be. As the cycle progresses again, I am
now in a phase of beginning to work with Color Infrared films and the images
you can capture and create there once you can control the medium are simply
wild.

Now
that you know a little bit about me and my work, please take a few minutes to
look around. I hope you enjoy the works I have contributed to this exhibit. I
thought it best not to give any of my own meanings, motivations or background
on each piece. So, if you feel a piece makes some profound statement about the
meaning of life or you just think it's a pretty picture, then what ever works
for you works for me too.
