they shock me to alertness with their warning barks and I warily move
on, knowing that to run will mean they attack - is that because you
become prey rather than potential equal or master? They sense a
display of "guilty fear"? I was tackled by such a display of fear as
a child, a feeling that remains still fresh in my mind, fresh like the
memory of the chill of snow down my boots, the pain of a bee sting to
the back, a soccer ball to my crotch, fear drawn out into an
agonizing endless moment with that snarling dog standing over me,
like on the stage as you begin your recital, or when revealing a
trespass to that person you trespassed against, or AFTER a skid on an
icy Wisconsin bridge, when you are in fact now safe
