Murmur
Thu, 02 Jul 1998 06:24:51 CDT (19 lines) There are several sounds if I listen. Usually I do not- it is background noise. Be grateful for selective attention to inputs. The way a person can ignore pain in the heat of battle- or a game, the same way I can ignore the hiss and low rumble of the air conditioning and the murmur and even occasional outburst from the other people in this room while I direct my attention to this page. And how when I type in my thoughts, I can ignore the other things within the field of my vision. There are people how are unable to filter their experience thus. Imagine the chaos they try to endure in their minds. Maybe if they could endure it, their lives would be very rich? Would the ability to endure it entail being able to process all the input? So every thing they see, hear, touch, smell, taste becomes part of their remembered experience, if only vaguely? Or do we all that, just at less than the conscious level? I've long wondered if we might not be able to bring up every stray bit of minutea that we have experienced, given perfect recall. I heard the theory that thoughts are stored as chemical imprints in our brains, that these mix and are diluted, losing their sharp definition in this manner. It seems impossible for me to understand, to picture, this process.
