Frisell, Gone Like A Train

Fri, 29 Jan 1999

The new Bill Frisell (Gone, Just Like A Train) is great. He is in a trio, with Viktor Krauss on bass, Jim Keltner on drums. Viktor is great, but the only thing I know about him is that he is Alison Krauss' brother. (See link for more info!) But he is splendid on this album.
Keltner, on the other hand has played on 'millions' of records. (Check it out- its almost unbelievable). In the liner notes, Bill says he was turned on to Jim's abilities by listening to him play on John Hiatt's Bring The Family. Jim shines here, with a marvelous lyricism rarely found in drummers.
This album showcases Bill in a broad diversity of styles, as a master of all of them. It shows just how captivating a instrumental trio can be. You might expect a certain 'sameness' over the course of a 70 minute instrumental trio CD. You don't find that problem on this album.
