"the Pharaohs" "Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer"
The Pharaohs, (not to be confused with Sam the Sham
and the....) a sixties jazz and soul group that had
members who left to form Earth Wind and Fire, and
others to play with Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart.
Kick-ass horn section, funky jazz with long
free-blowing sections (solos). Santana-style percussion,
too. A relatively unknown L.A. band that deserved
recognition.

My new pick is Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer's Tanglewood
Tree. Its simply beautiful. It covers a number of
moods and tempos, but all with Dave's unique world view,
his wonderful melodies and Tracy's exquisitely rendered
harmonies (and lead vocals, depending on the tune). I
place it with these albums- not for style, but for
timeless beauty and interest- Crosby Stills Nash &
Young- Deja Vu, Grateful Dead- American Beauty or
Workingman's Dead, Joni's Blue, Nick Drake's albums.
really. On the surface, this is simply folk with a country tinge.
But its much more. Its poetic, its perfect.
