meaning of lontar

Historical Meaning:
Lontar is a species in the palm tree family from which the leaves ("daun") were naturally dried and used by our ancestors in the old days as something to write on. It originally from 2 words : "lon" and "tar".

You see, back then , papers as we know now were not yet introduced to our lands. The existence of the ancient kingdoms, our ancestors' way of life, their arts were known by studying the old manuscripts on, among other things, the  lontar.

I named "Galeri Lontar" to my small business dealing with arts and crafts, especially those of ethnic Indonesian, because I was always aware of the beautiful inheritance from our ancestors. In general, I am mostly fascinated by the beauty and unique forms of clothes, home accessories, and small crafts which are enriched with distinctive patterns and symbols, handmade with skills  passed on throuh generations.

Personally I like to collect the etchnic arts and crafts from all parts of Indonesia. They vary in patterns and functions, marking the diversity of cultures and traditions of our country.
