The pictures on this page show Postignano Vecchio, a fortified village built in the 1200's  lying between
Umbria e Marche. It was completely abandoned after eartquake in 1963 (only a few families didn't go leave away and are still living nearby in the valley, in temporary buildings).
I took the shots in 1987 when the chirch and the houses were damaged but still whole; as years went by the wear of the time and of the
loneliness were destroying all of the village. The last time I visited it, about four years ago, the roof of the church had
fallen down and I couldn't go into many houses. In those years the people already talked about the rebuilding of the village. Indeed it began starting with the church, but during the last big
There is only one piece of good news about this unlucky village. It was published in the newspaper "Il Messaggero"
on 27 March 1998.
During the restoration of some buildings of the village (in the
1990's), a fresco painted in the 1500's was found under the wall of a church. The repairs of the fresco were finished two months before the earthquake. Unlikely, that day of march 1998 the tower of Postignano fell down over a lot of houses and also the wall of the fresco was destroyed.
But behind that wall, another wall appeared and on that wall there was
another fresco: a well preserved picture of 1400's crucifixion of S. Michele Arcangelo .
Now they are trying to repair also the first destroyed fresco.  and concerns the miraculous finding in the church of a fresco of 1400's. (as soon as possible the translation of the news will be published here).
