Several quarries were made of the sulphur bed near Rome, like Pomezia and Latera, but none of them yielded well. The exploitation of Pomezia reached the depth of twelve meters before coming up aganist the underground waters. Now the stope is filled by a lake of cobalt blue water that, near the shores, becomes red;walking around the edge of the hole and ooking down carefully you can see a lot of gas coming up |

Nearby there are also two small lakes: one of them has white coloured water due to
suplhureous spring and is similar to the famous one of Manziana (near the vulcanic lake of
Bracciano). Once the escavation zone was joined to the mine building on the hill with a long belt carrier passing over a road. |
| Now the
building and the belt carrier have been were pulled down and only the lake and few rusty
diggers captured in the vegetation are left.
It was the only mine in the neighborhood of Rome. The photos were taken on several occasions beetwen 1980 and 1995. |
