Hero’s Last Stand

He looks across the way
Knowing that his journey ends here
Behind him stand the lives of many
That which he must protect

Ahead lays the final sacrifice
One life in exchange for the rest
He nods to himself grimly
Accepting what must be done

For a hero must be willing
To give everything up
To stand for what he believes
No matter how his faith may waver

He hesitates for a moment
As a wave of fear comes
But he slowly swallows it down
And sets off toward his goal

For although others say that a real hero
Can look Death straight in the eye
True heroism isn't the absence of fear
But being afraid and doing it anyway
