Safari was started six years back, about 80% of what remains in the final version has been shot in just 2 years. That's because Shafi Imandar, who was playing a key role in the film. passed away before completing his work in the film. This necessitated replacing him (with Suresh Oberoi) and reshooting of almost all the scenes. The film was delayed because of Shafi's demise and Sanjay Dutt's imprisonment.

Safari is the film that's been long awaited. It has been talked about for more than five years. Sanjay Dutt actually started filming for friend-director Jyotin Goel before Sanjay was arrested on charges of terrorism a couple of years ago. "I have very rarely felt so close to a film," says Sanjay. He loved the subject and the role and loved the title of the film. "But then bad luck blocked our way. I got into all kinds of trouble for no reason at all and all my filmmakers suffered." While Sanjay was in jail, he was sorry for all the filmmakers that were depending on him. After he was out of the slammer, he redefined his priorities and Safari topped his list. It was difficult getting all the other actors to start where they had left off, but somehow they managed it. The film is supposed to be full of adventure and excitement.
