My maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Sue Sanders, was widowed three times. Her final husband was Pearson Grady Compton of Gallion, Alabama. Our oldest brother called her "Wawa" and so did the rest of us. Born in May 1904 in Elba, Alabama, Wawa died and was buried in her family plot in Elba in September 1990. Though she had several professions including teacher, home economist/county farm agent, beef and dairy farmer I most remember her in the job from which she retired in around 1970: caseworker for the Department of Pensions and Securities in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a casework supervisor at the time of her retirement to Laguna Beach. Florida. In 1985 she moved into the home of her youngest grandchild in Tennessee and lived there until her death.
I wish you had known her. As both a pianist and as a lover of music she helped inspire in me a love of music.
