Week Four: Review Questions

Kathryn Fletcher, kfletche.geo@yahoo.com

1. Describe two different ways to add a new layer.
  1. Use the menu item Layers > New Raster Layer
  2. Copy an image and use Edit > Paste as New Layer
2. What does flattening an image refer to?
Merging all of the layers into a single layer. Once you do this, you can no longer work with the original individual layers. You have to flatten the image before you can save it as a GIF or JPEG file. This is why you want to retain an up-to-date copy of the image saved as a .psp file for future editing.
3. You have a layer and you would like to copy it exactly (duplicate).  How would you go about doing this?
Right click on the layer name in the Layer Palette and select Duplicate Layer from the shortcut menu.
4. PSP allows you to Lock Transparency on a layer. What does locking transparency accomplish? What does it do?
If that layer has a transparent background, then activating that feature protects the transparent area from having any pixels added to it.
5. How would you bring a layer to the top?
You can use the Layer Palette: click on the layer you want to bring to the top and drag and drop it at the top of the list (the black line as you are dragging indicates the drop location).
