The Shadow of Scartaris
The small party travel across Iceland and on June 23rd begin the ascent of the great Mount Sneffels. It is quite dark when they reach the summit.
Next day they look out across the half-mile wide crater at the top of the mountain. The Professor asks Hans what the people of Iceland call the peak on which they stand. "Scartaris," he replies.
The little group descend into the crater. At the bottom they find three separate shafts disappearing down into the darkness and a sign carved into the side of a massive block of stone, for all travellers to see.
Silence surrounds them. Only the Peak of Scartaris is visible above the rim of the crater in which they stand. Which shaft should they take?
