The southern tunnel
The descent of the tunnel is obscure and winding. By six o'clock in the evening, the group have travelled six miles forward and one mile down. Water is getting short. They eat their evening meal in thoughtful silence and retire to sleep.
After a peaceful night, they awake refreshed and continue at once. Unfortunately, the tunnel soon levels out and then, to Harry's alarm, begins to slope up! Hans watches silently as Harry argues with his uncle.
