Lost!
For several days after their halt, the slopes become more rapid. Sometimes the slope is most perilous, almost vertical. Down and down they descend until they are more than ninety miles below the surface of the earth.
On August 7th, Harry is out in front, examining the different layers of granite he can see. Absorbed in his study, he walks too far ahead and suddenly finds himself alone. Worse, the little stream they have been following is no longer at his feet. Hurrying back up the slope, he is chilled to find he does not recognise the tunnel around him. When he stops to call he is surrounded by silence. With complete dispair, Harry realises he is lost!
Harry continues back up the slope but comes to a dead end. In the midst of anguish, a new horror takes possesion of his soul - his damaged lamp is going out and he has no tools to repair it! Its pale light becomes paler and soon expires. Harry is alone and lost in utter darkness and total silence nearly one hundred miles down into the earth!
