The Faces series is about my emotions and inner turmoil. Recently, I have been faced with many challenges in my life, much as we all are at times. During the last few years I have been watching my two teen-aged daughters deal with the problems of growing up in the 1990s, which, surprisingly, are much like the problems I experienced growing up in the 1960s. Yet the world has changed, and therefore my reactions to their problems are different than the choices I made three decades earlier. At times, I get frustrated with the complexity of the modern world, and I feel that I cannot offer them the same solutions I relied on growing up. I feel trapped, with no way to ease their minds. The faces in these works reflect my frustrations and my longing to escape my trap, and the pieces of rope, words and photo transfers represent my need to escape... -Joyce Hill, 1999
