The
Scarlet Letter The Final Test! |
THE final test will be comprehensive, meaning it will cover the entire book. There will be several baskic questions about plot in true/false and multiple choice fashion. There will also be a section consisting of matching characters to descriptions. Know the following characters:

The last part of the test for regular students will be six short answer questions. Answer the study questions clearly and completely. Some of the questions will ask for two things. Make sure you answer the question in complete sentences and without grammar or convention errors. Each question is worth four points.
The last part of the test for the advanced students will be to answer two of the following five essay statements below. Be as detailed and as complete as possible without leaving your thesis. Make sure you support your statements either through the use of in-text notation with direct quotations or through the use of paraphrasing from the book. Take special care to use a formal third person voice in your essay and that you use precise vocabulary when expressing your ideas. The essay quesitons for you to choose are
1) Discuss Hester Prynne as a modern woman. contrast her against the contemporary women in the novel. |
2) Aruge for or against the Calvinist view of sin and public versus private repentance. |
3) Explain how the scaffold scenes are used by Hawthorne and what forces the changes in each of the four main characters. |
4) Describe and explain the symbolic use of light versus darkness and the society vs. nature in The Scarlet Letter. |
5) Several characters are quilty of hypocrisy, vengence, and/or conformity. These are three powerful themes in Hawthorne's novel. Explain their effect on the characters. Whose sin is the worst? |
