Today's Insult: "It looks like someone tried to put a forest fire out on your face with a screw driver."
Things have been stupid over here.
Remember AnimeGirl? Well, in the space of the last couple weeks, she's been kicked out, brought back, and is treading a thin line. It started with the ex-con that she's seeing. She and Dirk were trying to pawn her bike to get some extra money (since she's broke), and this guy started talking to them outside the pawn shop. Dirk thought he was potentially the ugliest guy he'd ever seen in his life, as well as the stupidest. He'd gotten out of prison only two weeks before. AnimeGirl, however, just thought he was the greatest thing she'd ever laid eyes on and got his phone number. She kept wanting to bring him in the apartment, but we weren't having any of that.
Well, she ended up spending the entire next day with him. We didn't hear from her until she came home at 10:30 that night. Meanwhile, we got a call from her friend Bob, who was helping her mom move out of their old place. Apparently, the bike was not hers, and the (former) roommate it belonged to was threatening both her and Dirk with breaking and entering and theft charges. And! She gained access to her old house by breaking a window with a brick, because her mother was out and she was impatient. Luckily, the bike hadn't been sold yet, and Dirk made arrangements to get it to Bob so he could give it to the roommate.
We were pretty pissed, and it didn't help that we had no way of contacting Lea. We'd been getting sick of her coming and going, as well as her utter idiocy when it came to choosing friends, so we decided to get rid of her. Mainly, Aaron and Dirk decided to kick her out; I hadn't wanted her with us in the first place. She made me lose sleep. But it was left to me to break the news to her when she finally got home. I'm still pissed about that. Dirk was at work, but Aaron just gaped at the two of us like he'd just caught us feeding each other bugs.
That was hard. I'm not very good at upsetting people, even when I don't like them. I feel bad. I felt like a real asshole that night, until I heard her call Bob up and basically lay the blame for the bike theft, etc. at Dirk's feet. Then I didn't feel bad at all.
Unsurprisingly, none of her friends wanted her, and all the homeless shelters were filled. Jason, the guy who introduced her to us in the first place, sprung for a hotel room for her for the night, because he felt responsible for the whole situation. It was already 1 in the morning when I went to sleep; while Jason & Aaron loaded her stuff into the van to get her the hell out. Jason spent the night at our place. When I woke up, he told me that Aaron started crying about "turning his back on her" when they got back from the hotel. I passed it off as Aaron being a twit and thought nothing further of it.
Then, when I was at work, Dirk called me and told me that Aaron had gone to see AnimeGirl at the hotel. I had this sick sense of foreboding, which was borne out by Dirk calling me again to tell me that Aaron brought AnimeGirl back from the hotel, and had all her stuff in his van. I talked to him and told him that I damn well didn't want her back in the apartment, and he said that he understood how I felt. He promised she'd be gone by the time I got back from work. Then Dirk called me and told me that he was beginning to feel bad for AnimeGirl, too. In his words, he thought her path had crossed with ours for a specific purpose, that it was a test. If we turned her out with no place to go, we (especially him) were obviously failing that test. When I expressed my doubts, he related to me a story about a prince who was hunting tigers and came across a mother tiger and her cubs. The mother had been injured, and couldn't hunt for food, so she and her cubs were starving. The prince was so moved to pity that he decided to let the tigress eat him alive. Unfortunately, she was so weak that she couldn't, so he cut himself so she could drink his blood and gain strength from that. She drank his blood, became stronger, and eventually ate him, gaining the strength to hunt again. Thus, the tigress and her cubs were saved.
I told Dirk that if that had actually happened, the prince had just signed a death warrant for the tigress and her cubs. People don't like man-eating animals, especially if the man eaten was some sort of royalty.
My point notwithstanding, it became apparent that I am living with soft-hearted twits. I realized very quickly that I was going to be the bad guy in my continuing refusal to let bygones be bygones. AnimeGirl apologized for bad-mouthing us, and this was apparently all anyone but me needed. Fuckin' A. I already knew they weren't going to find anywhere to put her, and it was too much to hope that they'd drop her off in a deserted area of the mall parking lot with all her stuff. So I sucked it up and said she could stay.
But....I made it clear that I was taking absolutely no responsibility for finding her a job or telling her what the rules are. I'm not the twit who backed down. Of course, it took a few arguments before I could get Dirk and Aaron off their asses, but she filled out about thirty applications last week. I wonder if anyone's gonna hire her.
Aaron's already losing patience with her, and it's been less than two weeks. I've been taking her side for some stuff because he's an utter moron. I'm getting along with her alright, mostly because she made me a cool glo-in-the-dark hemp choker. I'm cheap that way.
In other news, we got a new computer. 60 gig hard drive, 56k modem, dvd/cd player, and a cd burner. I'm very happy. We've been downloading stuff like mad from napster, and Dirk burned his first CD ever last night. We're paying it off in installments — no interest until September 2001!
More tomorrow. Until then, I'd like to give a shout out to Scott, who started his journal again. I knew you wouldn't abandon us utterly.

Dirk and I could really use a new T.V. set, so if you aren't already a member of StartSampling.com go here to sign up, and please put skatterkat in the ‘referred by' box. It's free, and you get samples of really cool stuff! If you e-mail me and tell me you did so, I'll try to work out a way of sending some frog erasers your way.
