Here's a picture of the lagoon in Barra.
On the left you can see the small Isla de Puercos, or Pig Island.
There are no pigs on pig island because somebody ate them all.
On the right is Isla de Navidad, home of the Grand Bay Hotel and Marina.
The story is that the island was named "Christmas Island" because Barra
and the island were first discovered by the Spanish on Christmas day.
There are no Santa Clauses on Isla de Navidad because somebody
ate them all.
Here's a picture of the world-class Grand Bay Hotel
on the Isla de Navidad taken from Barra. The hotel also has a fantastic
marina where my parents have docked their boat for over a year.
It is a very popular destination for cruisers because the marina is
really nice and boats get full priviledges to use the facilities at the hotel.
A picture of Isla de Navidad from the other side of
the Barra sandspit. See the map link for a better idea of the topography
of this area.
