JONAH FLEES FROM GOD

The Lord’s word came to Jonah, to the city Nineveh go
Jonah didn’t want to, but instead of telling God so
He fled from His presence to a ship he made his way
He was determined to get himself far from the Lord that day

How foolish for a common man from God to run away
For God saw all he did, He knew where he was that day
The Lord he sent a mighty wind, the ship almost broke in two
The ship master came to Jonah to ask what they should do

They decided to cast lots to see who was to blame
The lot fell upon Jonah, they asked him to explain
He said he was a jew and served the one who made the sea
The men were much afraid, they wondered what was to be

Jonah told them plainly, cast me into the sea
That is the only way from this storm you will be free
They tried all else but failed, so Jonah they cast in
The Lord prepared a big fish to be there to swallow him

Inside the fish Jonah finally said he would fulfil God’s plan
Thanked the Lord for saving him, the fish spit him out on land
He preached unto the people, they repented of their sin
Because they sought the Lord, he chose not to destroy them

Then Jonah became angry for what God didn’t do
So God taught him a lesson before the day was through
He prepared a shelter for him with a gourd over his head
Then had a worm smote it and his protection was now dead

The sun beat hot upon him, Jonah wished that he could die
God said he shouldn’t be angry for the gourd that He’d sent by
He asked should I not have spared the city that was so great
When they repented before me when they learned of their fate

But he was more concerned about the gourd that day
Then he was about a city who for their sin would pay
We all can take a lesson of where our priorities should be
They should be for people, not things, for people need to be free
