According to our reading today, there is an after life and each of us decide how and where we will spend eternity. It's our choice. It will either be in Heaven with Jesus, or a lost eternity in hell. There is no place between.
The rich man had all he needed to satisfy his physical needs, but he had no time for God, and ended up in hell. In the end, the rich man's riches could do nothing for him. It couldn't buy his way out of hell. Lazarus had nothing compared to the standards of this world, but he knew God. His end was a beginning of good things.
Today this world is full of people living like the rich man. They live life to the fullest without a thought of anyone else. It's all self. They do nothing at all to help anyone and take no thought to the things of God.
But one day we will all have to stand before God and give an account of why we lived our lives the way we did. We won't be able to make any excuses, because excuses will utterly fail. We must be careful how we live from day to day. We must always try to live a life that is pleasing to God.
If you were to stand before God today, would he be pleased with what he sees?
