Scripture 2 Kings 10: 18-31

Jehu wanted to destroy all the worshippers of the god Baal. So, he pretended that he was a worshipper and called for a solemn assembly. The only ones that were allowed to attend were the ones who worshipped Baal. He made sure that the crowd was checked so that there was no one there who worshipped the Lord. Every Baal worshipper showed up and he gave them garments to wear. Then, after they had finished their burnt offering to Baal, he had them all killed. Thus Baal was no longer an object of worship in Israel. He also had all the images burnt.

As you read this you must be thinking that God must have been so pleased with what he had done. But, he didn’t destroy the golden calves that were in Bethel or Dan. So, he half did the job. God did reward him for what he did. But according to verse 31, even though he did all this he still did not follow God.

Aren’t we sometimes like Jehu in our Christian walk? We claim to be following Jesus and we sing songs from our hearts like “I surrender all.” And yet there are many times that our all is not surrendered, and there is a little part that we think is hidden, deep inside, that we want to keep all for ourselves. Just as Jehu partially serving God was wrong, it is also wrong for us to partially surrender out all. God requires all of you and I. And He is right to expect it.

Examine your life today and be sure that when you sing songs like I surrender all, that you can truly sing it from a heart that is totally surrendered. He is worthy of that. Isn’t He?

If we are to follow God
We must go all the way
He expects full obedience
As we follow Him each day
