Scripture Jonah 2:1-10

Jonah was running away from the call of God that was upon his life. God had called him to go preach to the city of Ninevah. He had boarded a boat and the men had cast him into the sea to save themselves from the storm. God had prepared a huge fish to swallow him. Here he was now, sitting in the belly of a fish. Wow!! I can sure think of better places to be, couldn’t you?

I guess while he was in the belly of the fish he had plenty of time to think about how wrong it had been for him to run away from the call of God. I can’t even in my wildest imagination know how it would feel to be inside a fish, can you?

Jonah prayed to God. He should have been honest with God before all this happened. I guess when he had started to sink he must have felt that he was a goner. Now he was realizing that even thought he was inside a fish, he had a lot to be thankful for.

He then offered a sacrifice of thanksgiving to God and told Him that he would do what he had vowed to do. He would go preach to the people of Ninevah. When Jonah said that, God caused the fish to vomit Jonah out on dry land. What a relief it must have been to be outside in the fresh air again.

Are you being called by God? Are you thinking about running away from that call? If you are, take a lesson from Jonah. You cannot run away from God. Where would you go???

Don’t run away when called by God
There’s nowhere you can go
Do all you can to work for God
Make serving Him your goal
