Scripture James 3: 10-13
Have you ever sat and just listened to people talk? I have, and sometimes what I've heard leaves a lot to be desired. In this passage of scripture James is telling the people that blessing and cursing should not be coming out of the same mouth. He then asked some questions. Does bitter and sweet water come out of the same fountain? Can olive berries grow on a fig tree? The obvious answer is no. And just as these things cannot be, so cursing and blessing should not come out of the same mouth.
When we are born again, one of the things that has to change is what comes out of our mouths. Before we accepted Jesus into our hearts some of us maybe swore or even talked dirty. When we became a Christian, the way we talked changed. To hear cursing come out of a believer's mouth is as abnormal as it would be to see olives growing on a fig tree. It should never happen!
We should never forget that the Lord hears all we say, all the time. He must be so displeased when he hears a believer talking foul language or cursing. Then later on they are praying and talking to Him with the same mouth they used to curse with.
Cursing and blessing should not
Come forth from the same mouth
If it does, take the soap of the word
And wash that dirty mouth out
